Perched between Historic Downtown Truckee and Lake Tahoe, this apartment puts the best of the Sierra Nevada within easy reach – and when the slopes close, you'll have good reason to linger. The stone fireplace in the living room earns its place on a cold mountain evening, and the covered deck is exactly where you want to be with a warm drink and pine-scented air. Come summer, the outdoor pool and lakeside terrace dining bring a different kind of ease. A free shuttle connects you to Northstar ski resort, with ski storage on site to keep things simple.

Home truths
The ski-in/ski-out access here depends on snow conditions – if the snowpack is low, you may need to use the resort shuttle to reach the slopes instead.
The barbecue and outdoor furniture are only available from Memorial Day through Labor Day, so if you're visiting outside those dates, alfresco dining won't be an option.

About Truckee
On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
