Tucked into the pines of Northstar, this rustic mountain cabin is about five minutes from the ski resort – close enough to feel the pull of the slopes without sacrificing the seclusion of the forest. The deck is where the cabin earns its keep: fire pit lit, trees pressing in on all sides, the evening slowing to a crackle. Inside, timber-beamed ceilings and a wood-burning fireplace do the work after a long day on the mountain. A free shuttle connects you to Northstar village, and concierge services – fridge stocking, ski gear, private chefs – mean you can arrive and simply unwind.

Home truths
If you're travelling with little ones, your host can provide a pack 'n' play cot and arrange a high chair – you'll need to request the high chair at least twenty-four hours before arrival.
The barbecue and all outdoor furniture are only set up between Memorial Day and Labor Day, so if you're visiting outside that window you won't have access to the outdoor dining setup.
Due to local wildfire regulations, outdoor wood burning, fire pits, and charcoal grills are strictly prohibited – this includes the deck area, so plan accordingly if you were hoping for an outdoor fire.
There's no air conditioning here, so if you're visiting in summer you may find it warm during the day – the elevation helps, but it's worth bearing in mind.
While the home can sleep up to eleven people, the maximum occupancy is eight guests.
The second bedroom has a double-double bunk bed.

About Truckee
On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
