Gathered round a stone fireplace beneath vaulted timber ceilings, this pine-framed mountain house near Truckee sets the tone for a ski trip done properly. Sierra Nevada's slopes are just minutes away, and after a day on the piste, a sauna and a wraparound forest deck – where mountain air drifts through the trees at dusk – make coming home the best part of the day. When the evening draws in, there's a cinema room with leather recliners, a pool table, and forest views that remind you exactly why you came.

Local guide
About Truckee
On the border of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is one of the largest bodies of water in the US. As you'd expect, it's an area of astounding beauty, but the lake has also made a name for itself as a centre for both winter sports and water sports, as well as hiking and cycling. The north shore is a bit quieter and more relaxed than the south. While there's still plenty to do (including the annual food and wine festival), you're unlikely to see crowds like you do in other parts of the region.
