Local guide
About Chiado
Chiado is full of old-world charm, and is one of the best-loved parts of Lisbon. Think pastel-hued homes, cobbled streets and plenty of squares to soak up the atmosphere. There’s a slower pace of life in Chiado, which is why it’s so popular with locals. Hop on a tram to take in the open-air ruin of the Camo church, a Gothic masterpiece that was mostly destroyed in an earthquake, or hit the shops – this is one of Lisbon’s best shopping districts, after all.
Explore the area

Visit the impressive ruins of Carmo Convent
The ruins of this colossal gothic church are evocative reminders of the devastation left by the 1755 earthquake, during which it was the largest church in Lisbon.

Drink an espresso at Café Nicola
This traditional café opened in 1787 and was known as the Academia in the golden times where many intellectuals used to meet here. There is a statue of poet Bocage and nice paintings inside
