Saturnia manages to bridge the divide between history and modernity, which is really quite the feat. It combines original features, such as the wooden ceiling, and nods to the past with amenities that very much belong in the 2020s. Structurally, it’s hard to fault, with lots of space and lots of light, and while the kitchen isn’t a social hub, it’s well-equipped and can handle all but the largest meals. Throw in a wonderful location near the river, and you’re on to a winner.

About Navona

Stretching from Piazza Navona to the river, the area is one of the most atmospheric in the city. The Piazza, with its Bernini statues and Borromini church, is the main draw, but there are any number of golden palazzos, many with inner courtyards to explore. The area is sliced in two by Corso Vittorio Emmanuele, one of Rome's most frenetic roads, but you can dive down the nearest sides street...
