Well located, with good-quality furniture and plenty of space, Roman Consul is a great all-rounder. Prati is one of the newest areas of central Rome (bear in mind, we’re still talking 1800s here), and the wide avenues house all sorts of great shops and restaurants. Although if you want to cook, you’re set with two kitchens. That brings us to the slightly unusual, but quite cool aspect – it’s really two flats, each independent, that have been joined together. This makes it particularly good for groups where a bit of extra privacy would be appreciated.

Home truths

The flat's on the ground floor, and looks out on to the street

There's no oven in the kitchen, nor any laundry facilities

Several people can sleep in sofa beds (a double in the living room and a double in the master bedroom), but there are only two bathrooms, so eight guests at once might be a stretch

The bathrooms don't have any windows, though there are decent extractor fans

About Prati

Prati sits cheek by jowl with Vatican City - not that you would necessarily know from within. The newest of Rome's districts, built between 1873-1921, its road plan was designed so that none of the streets would have St. Peter’s Dome in the background, a reflection of the tension between the new Italian state and the Vatican during its construction. Once a verdant area of meadows, vegetable gardens and vineyards,...
