Tucked away in a typical street in Alfama, this apartment offers a quiet escape in one of Lisbon's most emblematic neighbourhoods. The building is on a steep hill, but the good news is, you're halfway up to the Castle already (it’s a two-minute walk away). Heading downhill takes you to the fado bars and local restaurants of the old quarter in just a few footsteps. Inside the apartment is a calming haven away from the city noise. A dash of polished cement here, wooden textures there, and an intimate bedroom that ensures a good night's sleep – the modern design works wonders with the old surroundings. It’s not often we highlight a bathroom, but this one with its wall of ferns and Japanese zen-like grey walls feels a bit special.

As with most homes in Alfama, the WiFi isn't super fast – we measured 7mbps when we visited
Although the kitchen is well-equipped with appliances, it doesn't have the basic cooking ingredients
The plants in the bathroom are plastic, but still look the part
It's an easy stroll downhill to the Old Quarter, but a slog back up the hill to the apartment

About Alfama
As Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhood, it’s not surprising that Alfama is also the corner of the city with the most character. Here, you’ll get an authentic taste of the real Portugal, away from the tourist-trodden trails of the centre. Unlike most of Lisbon, this area survived the famous 1755 earthquake, preserving an image of the old capital. Steep, cobbled streets are flanked with down-to-earth cafés, crumbling churches and intimate fado venues...
