This fuss-free bolthole may be small in size, but it's mighty on location. Set just a short hop over a bridge from Santa Lucia Station, arriving in Venice is a breeze, and all the must-see sights are within walking distance. Though the interiors may feel pared-back, the high ceilings are a nice touch. Expect a compact kitchen with limited preparation space. Although with some of the area's best restaurants within easy walking distance, we don't think you'll mind.

Rialto is right in the middle of Venice’s other main districts – it doesn't really get more central than this. It’s a favourite with tourists, particularly as its less hectic than San Marco (this is all relative though – everywhere in Venice is packed). It’s intersected by many small intertwining canals, which make for good views and plenty of opportunity for gondola rides, if that's your cup of tea. Perhaps...
