With a view like this, it’s no wonder this historic villa was the home of a prevalent Italian writer and thinker. The terraced gardens are slender, but they offer a beautiful panorama of Lake Como. Plus, there’s a little, furnished balcony. The traditional decor inside won’t suit everyone, but the kitchen has all the mod cons you need for self-catering and the restored tiled floors keep things cool in summer. All of the bedrooms are upstairs, and one has an attached office room for those working remotely. The location is the real highlight – perched on the edge of Varenna on the banks of Lake Como with the town’s atmospheric restaurants and bars within walking distance.

There are quite a few steps between the terraced gardens and all of the bedrooms are upstairs, so this place may not be suitable for those with limited mobility.
There are quite a lot of steps from the parking space to the entrance of this home – something to bear in mind if you plan on bringing heavy cases.
