Few homes make as much of a first impression as The Hangar. Designed by the Austrian artist, Reinhold Traxl, it’s a converted warehouse that might seem more at home in Brooklyn than in the Tuscan countryside. You wouldn’t expect to be a half-hour drive from Siena. Overall, it feels like an installation as much as a home, and yet never impersonal. The sculpture garden is a real highlight, as are the views over the ruins of Castello Montelifré. True, if you’re set on a traditional farmhouse, you might be slightly shocked, but this is the kind of unique, design-led home that doesn’t come around very often.

About Tuscany
Perhaps the first region to come to mind when you think of holidays in Italy, there’s no denying Tuscany’s beauty. The term “Rolling hills” could have been coined here, where grapes ripen on vines in the folds of the valleys and ancient towns crown hilltops. Florence, with its fairytale ancient buildings, dramatic Ponte Vecchio over the river Arno, and Rennaisance collections in the Uffizi Gallery, has always been a big...
