This cosy and uncluttered cottage is a slice of remote lakeside living that will leave you feeling thoroughly refreshed. Sat on the edge of Bewl Water, this is a home for landscape painters and aspiring authors — an afternoon on the terrace is nothing short of inspirational. Inside, large windows make the space feel bright and inviting, while the French oak flooring, exposed brickwork and comfy furnishings arranged around a log-burning fireplace add a rustic element. Suffice to say, it's a lovely space for relaxing after a day spent exploring the beautiful countryside surroundings. From your garden, it's possible to head on to the thirteen-mile cycle trail through woodlands and meadows, before stopping off for a well earned drink at the local pub in the nearby village of Ticehurst — less than ten minutes away on the saddle or twenty-two minutes on foot. By car, National Trust castles and the town of Royal Tunbridge Wells are within a twenty-minute journey, too.

Simply put, it’s the huge, mostly flat part of the south east that fits neatly in between the hills of the North and South Downs. Taken from the Old English word ‘wald’, meaning forest,...
