Like red squirrels, idyllic and understated elegance is a rarity nowadays. That’s why it’s so pleasing to find both in this home, which is set in the serene wilderness of the Eden Valley. On a winding country lane between the Pennines and the Lake District, this is the perfect holiday for when you just want to get away from it all. Outside, you’ll dine in the sun in a garden filled with climbing roses – and perhaps spot some of the famous wildlife. There’s a big lawn for kids to run around and even bigger fields beyond that. Inside, it’s a choice between the cosy family snug set around a wood-burning stove or the more formal lounge around a fireplace. The kitchen retains all its farmhouse charm, with a big range-style cooker, dining for eight and a view of the patchwork fields from the windows.

Tiny stone-house villages and hamlets dot the valleys and cluster around babbling rivers – Bowlees is particularly idyllic and is home to the North Pennines information centre....
