Rustic, romantic and lovingly restored, this farmhouse in the heart of Tuscany is a Renaissance painting come to life. Spread across the main villa and an adjoining hayloft, there are two living and dining areas to call your own. Here, antique character meets 21st century living – stone walls, arched doorways and beamed ceilings feature alongside a glossy kitchen, sparkling bathrooms and bedrooms with an old-world charm. In the mornings, throw open the French doors and enjoy an espresso in the conservatory before taking a refreshing dip in the pool. Relax under the Tuscan sun on one of the lounge chairs with an engrossing read and a glass of local wine. The rural setting can't be topped – you're surrounded by cypress trees, views of the countryside and an ancient bell tower in the garden that dates back to the 1200s. There's a local bakery, two restaurants and a shop within walking distance, but for more options, drive to nearby medieval Lucca. In the evenings, unwind with drinks under the gazebo as the sun goes down. The life.

Lucca is one of Italy’s best-kept secrets. Surrounded by fortified walls, its core is a warren of pretty piazzas, traditional Tuscan trattorias, and beautifully preserved churches. Most of the action happens in Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, a vast central square lined with alfresco restaurants and Renaissance-era architecture. There’s a buzzy nightlife scene centred around cool enotecas and craft beer bars. On Via Fillungo, you’ll find some of Lucca’s finest boutiques, with high-end...
