It doesn’t get much more Puglian than a stay in a traditional trullo. Made entirely of whitewashed limestone, the distinctive conical design is a hallmark of the Itria Valley. This particular trullo has been tastefully updated to a space where historical charm meets modern comfort. There’s a mix of modern and antique furnishings, a small but well-equipped kitchen and a fabulous private pool, perfect for couples or a young family. Picture yourself taking a morning swim or a wander through the ancient olive groves that surround the garden. Escape from the midday heat with lunch and a glass of something chilled in the poolside pavilion before a snooze on one of the wooden sun loungers. Make sure you don’t miss a stroll through Alberobello, Puglia’s famous trulli town – there’s nowhere else like this in the world.

If you’re looking to slow down the pace of life for a few weeks, there are worse places than Puglia. This is Italy at its most Italian, with year-round good weather (though it can get hot in the summer) and an estimated 60 million olive trees. That’s a lot of groves to wander through. Puglia’s also famous for its Trulli houses. The conical stone roofs of these huts are synonymous...
