Sweepings hillside views, a short drive to the beach and an old stone villa – this is the Croatian idyll. The home was built in 1720 and retains its thick stone walls and wooden ceiling on display. Despite its age, the living area is an open space of seating nooks, country-style dining and a surprisingly modern kitchen in rustic-chic aesthetic. Bedrooms are tucked under ancient eaves where nightlights and artworks hide in convenient stone alcoves. It’s outside that really has us impressed, though, where a covered terrace houses a full outdoor kitchen with a built-in barbecue and a wooden table big enough for the whole group to dine. Views stretch over the verdant hills out to the sea and the stone pathways are dotted with lush plants. The icing on the cake is the stepped vegetable garden, practically hewn into the hillside.

About Istria
Croatia’s northern peninsula, jutting out into the cool blue of the Adriatic Sea, has been a traveller favourite for decades. The region’s capital, Pula, is home to an ancient Roman amphitheatre, as well as family-run restaurants serving rustic fare from the hillside farmsteads around Istria and delicious local wines from the region’s vineyards. The coast is dotted with swimming platforms and rocky outcrops to stretch out on after a dip...
