Overlooking the River Esk in Whitby, this traditional seaside cottage is full of history and references to its nautical past. Dating back to 1816 and once home to Gideon Smales – one of Whitby’s grandest timber merchants who owned fleets that sailed to every fjord in Scandinavia – there’s an elegant richness to the decor here that reflects its proud heritage. From its sophisticated leather sofas to its wood floors and sailing paraphernalia, the lounge is a debonair affair that just begs to be relaxed in with a whisky and a good book. We love the telescope in front of the picture window that invites you to watch the yachts and sailboats right outside, while the downstairs kitchen feels infinitely cosy with its electric stove and sunny dining nook. The master bedroom is elegance personified with its four-poster bed and dark wood accents and the master bathroom’s roll-top tub just begs for long bubble baths after a day of sightseeing. With a furnished patio inviting alfresco breakfasts and evening drinks beneath the stars, you’re all set to enjoy the magic of this coastal spot. Outside of your home, you’re just a twelve-minute walk from the 199 Steps, a ten-minute stroll to Whitby Abbey and a twenty-minute walk from Whitby’s sandy beach.

About Whitby

Famously the setting of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, there’s something hauntingly beautiful about Whitby. The ruins of Whitby Abbey, set atop a windy hill overlooking the town, are just like a scene from a gothic novel. When the sun sets, ghost tours amble through the cobbled streets, revealing the town’s dramatic history. By day it’s all idyllic fishing village vibes, with a hint of Victorian holidays.
