It's the views of terracotta rooftops reaching out across the city that had us at this bright apartment. Located in Bica, this picturesque neighbourhood dating back to 1597 is as charming as it gets (think colourful Pombaline facades, balconies with tumbling flowers, and cobblestone streets). Down in the narrow lanes below, you'll find locals grabbing their 'Bica' (that's expresso to us) from authentic cafes and buzzing bars. It's also home to Lisbon's most instagrammable sight – the Elevador da Bica funicular, which trundles up to Bairro Alto to reveal breathtaking views of the Tagus River. Back down at the apartment, you'll love the grand proportions and lofty feel, with polished wood flooring and crisp white interiors. As typical of traditional Lisbon apartments, the rooms are set off a long corridor meaning you can all spill out here. The sociable living area has those great views to enjoy and plenty of space to crash out in after a long day exploring the city. While in the kitchen, there are the basic gadgets to rustle up a bite to eat. Or keep things simple and grab a take-out from the famous gourmet food court in Ribeira Market; it's just three minutes away.

Home truths

  • The apartment is located on the second floor - with no elevator

  • You’ll check into this home using a lockbox

  • Child-friendly amenities such as a cot and highchair are available upon request at an extra cost

  • There’s a coffee machine here but you’ll need to bring your own pods, along with any condiments such as oil, sugar, salt that you might require

  • Bica is a busy area and there are bars close to the apartment, so some noise can be expected, especially on weekend nights

  • Like many historical buildings in the city, there is the possibility when the river tide changes the apartment may experience some plumbing odors – though we’ve been told this happens very rarely
