Overlooking the traditional red rooftops of the village of Sintra, this home feels like a hilltop retreat. While it’s just a half-hour drive from the bustling metropolis of Lisbon, this location is wonderfully serene. With a vibrant old town just over twenty minutes away on foot, and sitting on the border of the enormous Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, this is a perfect base for exploring everything the region has to offer. As you arrive at its charming exterior and ascend the white staircase of this villa, the bright-red door beckons you inside. The interiors have nods to traditional Portuguese features, like decorative and colourful tiles in both the kitchen and bathroom. With woven wall decorations and rugs, there’s a natural and cosy vibe. That said, this refurbished old home is modern and fresh overall, with industrial-style furniture such as a black metal armchair and bed frame. We can’t imagine anything better than waking up here with a pastéis de nata and an espresso to start the day, as you admire absolutely unmatched views of the village and hills beyond.

It’s also a city of colour, with its vibrant yellow trams, terracotta rooftops and azulejo facades. As Europe’s second oldest city, Lisbon vibrates to the echoes of its past but it has taken vast strides to become a capital of cool, a city known for its grit and grandeur...
