This Tuscan villa is grand Italian rusticana at its finest. Though the wooden ceilings, thick stone walls and view of vineyards for miles feels like an 18th-century farmhouse, the glowing candelabra, rich oil paintings and antique furniture are more manor house-esque. The grounds are dotted with myriad places to recline and eat (both at the same time if you fancy), with a wooden dining table in the shade, or a wrought iron bistro set in the sun, and day beds and loungers lining the swimming pool. On top of the traditionally Tuscan flair, there’s a hint of Morocco, especially in the indoor dining room, lit by lamplight. For chilly nights there’s an old stone fireplace in the lounge, and the real Italian country kitchen beckons for rustic fare cooked up by the old hearthside. If you want to get out and explore Tuscany, the surrounding hillsides are dotted with ruined castles between rolling vineyards and the beautiful city of Siena is just a twenty-minute drive away.

The Piazza del Campo, where the race ends, is also the focal point of the city – a vast, fan-shaped square towards which everything seems to lead. Around the piazza...
