Once an Edwardian grammar school, this home in Suffolk gets full marks from us. The design is modern, sleek and styled after Scandinavian hygge – think bright open-plan living spaces, rainfall showers and a fully-equipped kitchen. But the host has also taken care to retain the original features, like the vaulted ceiling and mullioned windows. Scattered around are trinkets harking back to home's heritage – an old school bell here, a school chair there – which makes for a characterful stay. On chilly evenings, throw a log on the wood-burner and curl up by the fire with a film streaming on the smart TV. If you're in the mood to cook, rustle up a meal in the bespoke kitchen and dine in front of the huge windows, followed by a game of cards as you share a bottle of wine. Upstairs, a gallery-style landing leads to the master suite, which is truly something special. A sleigh bed, walk-in wardrobe and a hotel-worthy en-suite will have you feeling like the headteacher, albeit a glamorous one. When you're ready to explore, Leiston has a few eateries, a cinema and a village pub, but the real adventure lies along the Suffolk Heritage Coast... – Aldeburgh, Thorpeness and Sizewell are all a ten-minute drive away.
