Once the stomping grounds of writer James Joyce, Dublin's Mountjoy Square is a popular residential neighbourhood. With Temple Bar only a twenty-minute bus ride away, this neck of the woods is a great option for those wanting to be close to the action, yet tucked away from the livelier spots. Spend your days picnicking in Mountjoy Square Park, sipping pints of Guinness at the Victorian pubs in Phibsboro or grabbing a bite to eat at the myriad of coffee shops, bakeries and international eateries lining Dorset Street Lower. Prefer a cosy night at home, instead? This pocket-sized studio flat is just the ticket. Stylish and snug, the design emulates the area's history – think sash windows, high ceilings and bright colours full of Irish cheer. The kitchenette is on the smaller side (there's no oven) but you can still rustle up light bites when you're in the mood to cook. Snuggle up on the bed and stream your favourite show on the TV, or if you're in town on business, you can do some work at the desk. It's tiny, there's no denying that, but with so much to do in the city, we think this is an excellent base for exploring.

It’s Dublin’s theatre district, with four in close walking distance. On O’Connell Street in particular there’s a wide range of pubs and restaurants, though the atmosphere in the streets isn’t rowdy as it is over in Temple Bar. This is a...
