Freshwater lakes, jagged mountains, and rolling hills are among the striking natural scenes you’ll witness as a visitor in England’s Lake District. Half an hour by car from the town of Kendal, this former barn is ideal if you’re looking to roam the remote side of this magnificent region. Wander west along the serene stream of the Bretherdale Beck river, and you’ll end up at this glorious stone barn, just three minutes from the water. As you arrive at the home, you get a real sense of rustic tradition and history from the exterior. However, the interiors tell another story. Modern, minimal, and luxurious, this is certainly not the rustic home you’d imagine. But we love how the architect has retained the original structures – beams, high ceilings, and sloped eaves all work in harmony to create a unique space over three floors. You’ll certainly enjoy tumblers of whisky by the floating fireplace, and alfresco barbecues out on the private patio. But there’s even more opulence hidden away. Head to the outhouse, where you’ll find a games room with a pool table and darts, plus a spa with a sauna and steam room. Not exactly country living as you’d expect.
