There are few places on earth as peaceful as Tuscany – see for yourself when you stay at this rural retreat on the outskirts of Montelopio. While the villa benefits from being close to this medieval village's amenities, it's far enough away that you can enjoy the enchanting countryside without interruption. The highlight for us has to be the vast garden, where you can lounge by the pool (or in it) and listen to birds chirp as a gentle breeze dances through the trees. In the evenings, kick back in the shaded lounge area after grilling locally-grown veg on the outdoor stove. While somewhat traditionally decorated, this home has a modern heart. You can feel at ease knowing your needs have been taken care of, from the well-outfitted kitchen to the bright bedrooms equipped with that all-important air conditioning. If you can bear to leave this secluded spot, venture to nearby Volterra. This walled mountaintop town is a honeypot for history buffs, exhibiting architectural relics from Etruscan, Roman and Medieval periods. Even if this doesn't interest you, the site is well worth a visit for its expansive views across the surrounding hills.
