Maybe it’s the sound of the Dysynni River babbling past your door. Or it could be those sweeping views of the dramatic Welsh mountains that greet you from the moment you arrive. Either way, there’s something instantly calming about this farmhouse set at the foot of Snowdonia in North Wales. Step inside, and this is the ultimate Welsh dream cottage – with exposed beams, chocolate-box windows, a made-for-action Aga cooker, and an inglenook fireplace at its heart. While upstairs, the serene bedrooms are pared back and unfussy, letting those pretty garden scenes and magnificent mountain panoramas seen through every bedroom window do all the talking. When it’s time to don your walking boots and get out exploring, you’re spoilt for choice here. Cadair Idris, the highest mountain in Southern Snowdonia, is on your doorstep – as is Castell y Bere, with its historical ruins strung along the foot of the mountains. Or, pack up a beach bag and head to the vast shores of Tywyn for a wander along its five miles of sandy beaches backed by a promenade and dunes. When tummies start to rumble, nip into the dinky seaside village of Aberdyfi (a twenty-minute drive) for lip-smacking fish... and chip suppers, homemade ice cream and a paddle along its golden shores – it’s all as charming as it sounds.
