At the mouth of the River Dart sits a waterfront town called, you guessed it, Dartmouth. Set in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with a rich seafaring history as well as fine seafood restaurants and classic chippies, this vibrant settlement is perfect for an English coastal escape. And if it’s that historic element that really floats your boat, then this cottage is a real treat. Full of character and quirk, this home feels a little like stepping into an antique store. At the heart of it all, the living space is where you’ll be spending a lot of cosy evenings. Chunky, original timber beams line the ceiling, painted in dusty blue to match the wood panelling on the walls. A wood-burning fireplace creates a warming glow against this blue backdrop, while nautical trinkets can be found in every corner. Our favourites are the model boats and the captain’s wheel at the foot of the stairs. Following these upwards, you’ll find yet more intriguing pieces. A clothes mangle sits at the top, alongside the watchful eye of Poseidon. And in the bathroom, the vintage Royal Navy sign is a less-than-subtle reminder of the town’s history – which you can ponder...

About Devon

With its vibrant cities, wild moors and picture-perfect beaches – we can see why so many poets and writers, such as Ted Hughes, Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle, have been inspired by its stunning landscapes. Chic waterside towns such as Salcombe and Dartmouth appeal to yachties, while Totnes attracts a more alternative crowd. Or head to Exeter with its cathedral and riverside bars and restaurants on the picturesque quay....
