Castaway to this sensational converted lighthouse, perched on its own uninhabited isle, yet mere minutes away from its sister island of Vis. Originally constructed as a lighthouse in 1873 during the Austro-Hungarian reign, these days, the home is a paradise for explorers chasing unique experiences. Inside, exposed stone walls and maritime paraphernalia remain from the seafaring days of yore. While everywhere else has been beautifully reimagined for modern living, with oh-so-regal bedrooms and luxurious bathrooms complete with rainfall showers to kick-start your day. For entertainment, there’s a cosy living room with a fireplace to curl up beside for evening movies. Though we suspect those knockout vistas and bubbly heated Jacuzzi outside might be all you need to while away the days. Rustle up the cocktails, fire up the barbecue, and take a pew at the outdoor sofas on the veranda – the sunsets are spell-bounding from here. When it’s time to cast your nets and explore the island, don your hiking boots for a walk or take a dip in the sea – you have the whole island at your disposal. And should you fancy a change of scene, your private skipper is on hand to whizz you over to Vis or one of the nearby beaches or caves via speedboat – sunglasses and cameras at the ready, folks.

Within the ancient walls of Dubrovnik, sand-hued buildings with orange rooftops jut out into the azure sea. That’s not the only pearl Croatia is hiding. Split has the narrow, timeworn streets of Diocletian’s Palace to rival Dubrovnik’s old town, and sparking...
