Only a 350-metre amble from your front door, why not sunbathe on the cliff-hugged Praia da Marinha – widely considered one of Europe's best beaches for scenic beauty? Alternatively, we think a trip to Carvoeiro is worth the 9 kilometre drive for its watersports and nightlife. Further inland, birdwatchers flock to the Arrozal Nossa Senhora do Rosário. With its cosy fireplace and cooling marble floors, this beautiful villa serves as a great home base during any time of year. If you don't fancy dining under the domed ceiling, simply serve your meals alfresco, instead. Just imagine unwinding beneath blue skies and treating everyone to poolside cocktails. Once you grow peckish after a coastal adventure, how about firing up the barbecue and trying Portuguese piri-piri chicken?
