Hidden behind a classic tenement exterior, this is an unassuming gem in the Lower East Side. With a private entrance, it's a lower ground floor apartment in a building that dates back to 1816. It would have been easy, over the years, to modernise the space and erase its character but the delightful thing about this home is that it's rustic, stripped-back and about as quaint as it gets in this ultra-modern city. Its authentic charm is there to see in its exposed brick walls, its wooden beams and in fireplaces that have you thinking you've arrived at your cosy cabin in the woods. And design fans will really feel at home here thanks to its designer vintage furnishings, clever lighting and carefully curated art. While the kitchen isn't huge, it's perfect for rustling up quick meals and the comfortable bedroom is magical at night with the fairy lights switched on in the fireplace. Here you'll be on a quiet block with great nightlife just around the corner and just a few blocks from the East River.

Home truths

This apartment is just below street level so it doesn't get a great deal of natural light and you'll be able to see passersby from your living room windows

There's a closet that's out of bounds because the host keeps his belongings in it

Free on-street parking is often available nearby but the F train at East Broadway is the closest subway stop (just a few minutes on foot)

This home has a private entrance

The bedroom looks out to a small garden space that nobody uses so it is more private than it may at first feel

About FiDi

The Financial District sits at the Southern end of Manhattan Island and is a mass of interwoven streets that blend the old with the new – quite unlike the grid-based avenues of the rest of Manhattan. Here, shining glass skyscrapers emerge above the 17th-century cobbled streets of the original New Amsterdam settlement. 19th-century Greystone buildings now house the headquarters of the most advanced companies in the world. Being the major...

Host

This home is managed by dan

This home is managed directly by its owner who will be your point of contact before and during your stay. French-born Dan is a graphic artist who designs film and Broadway posters, and the design of his apartment definitely reflects his sophisticated eye. He's a real fan of mid-century furniture and there are some beautiful examples of this within the home.
