It may be dated, but this converted barn in the French countryside has rustic charm in spades. The cosy lounge is great for families – with a pool table and a sofa bed for two extra guests, it acts as a games room by day and an additional bedroom come evening. There isn’t wi-fi here, so be prepared to switch off. But, as Charente-Maritime is known for sunshine, you'll have plenty of opportunities to splash in the private heated pool and dine alfresco in the sprawling garden. For adventures further afield, Saintes has cafes and weekly markets (10 kilometres away) or drive thirty minutes to visit sandy beaches and Cognac distilleries.

Home truths

The traditional style is dated and needs some TLC – despite that, we've included this home in our collection for its garden, rural location and rustic character

There isn't wi-fi here, so we wouldn't suggest this home as a place to work remotely

While the second bathroom isn't photographed, we expect the style to be consistent with the rest of the home

On request, two extra guests can sleep on the sofa bed in the games room, bringing the total guest count up to eight

If you're travelling with little ones, your host can provide a travel cot and high chair on request

You'll need to bring your own pool towels with you

Hiring a car is essential here, especially if you're keen to explore the region – there's private parking on-site

About France

You could easily take a lifetime’s worth of French holidays and still feel like you haven’t scratched the nation’s surface. The most visited country in the world, France has long inspired artists, revolutionaries, dreamers, and bons vivants with its storybook landscapes, artistic treasures, and cultural idiosyncrasies. Paris is, of course, the country’s glittering centrepiece but there are countless beauty spots worth discovering outside of the City of Light. Sun yourself...
