1. Valais, Switzerland

If you're here, you're wondering where the best place to ski with children truly is - and we're here to help. One of our favourite resorts to visit with the family in tow is Zermatt - not just for its chocolate-box looks, but also because there's plenty to keep little ones entertained. Take Wolli's Park, for instance - a little snow playground that’s ideal for children to have their first experience of the slopes. What's more, it's a doddle to reach on the shuttle funicular. Meanwhile, adults looking to test their skills can take on the Matterhorn, one of Europe's highest peaks, which straddles the border between Switzerland and Italy. Majestic scenery, guaranteed snow conditions, and 148 incredible slopes - what more could you ask for? Zermatt is car-free, so the kids can enjoy a trip in a horse-drawn carriage, or try out the snowshoeing and snow trails.

2. Tyrol, Austria

Make your way to Tyrol to discover Sölden ski resort - an absolute gem of a destination. Sölden is an Alpine resort in the Ötztal Valley with reliable snow, thanks to the year-round glacial coverage. Its outstanding gastronomy also makes Sölden one of the most famous winter destinations in the Alps - and as if that wasn't enough, it's also perfect for families. Little ones will feel at home at the well-equipped kindergartens in Innerwald (accessible from Sölden without a ski pass), as well as on the Giggijjoch - it's an excellent place for them to get the hang of skiing in no time. The season can begin as early as September, and already be in full swing by the Autumn half-term - a great excuse to swap a bucket and spade for a beanie and goggles. Sölden has three mountains over 3000m in altitude, also known as the "Big 3", with a 15 km descent from the highest point at Schwarze Schneide.

At 2100m, Tignes is famed for having one of the longest ski seasons in Europe. It's renowned as an excellent base for all abilities, and is brilliant for little ones to get started. Espace Killy is a great place to get them acquainted with the slopes, thanks to its good snow, slow lifts, and a laid-back atmosphere. Tignes also has excellent beginner slopes at Le Lac and Le Lavache, so you're spoilt for choice. Suppose you're looking for more than just some of the best snow in the Alps? There's also an array of things to do here, including swimming, rock climbing, ice skating, snowshoeing, dog sledding, and snow mountain-biking - enough to keep even the most adventure-hungry busy for days. Don't forget to explore the slopes above Tignes: Les Boisses and Tignes Les Brevières. These are often overlooked, but are among the most varied and exciting in L'Espace Killy.

If you think you have to forgo luxury when going on a family ski trip, think again. Lapland combines the two, proving to be the ultimate spot for the whole family to enjoy time on the slopes. Take Kittilä, a fairytale spot with log cabins, postcard-perfect views, and peaceful serenity. It's an area of outstanding natural beauty that's inspired many of Finland's most famous artists, whose works can be found at Kittilä's museums. Looking for adventure? Head to the Levi ski resort, where you'll find 44km of terrain to suit all abilities, from pristine greens to white knuckle off-piste adventures. And what about the kids? There's a fantastic playground right by Front Slopes and the Tenavatokka indoor creche, where they can unwind with handicrafts. Not forgetting the opportunity to meet Santa and his team of friendly reindeer, of course.

Although not typically considered a ski destination, the Catalan city of Girona is fast becoming a popular spot for those looking to hit the slopes. You'll find yourself in the immaculate Pyrenees mountains, just a short drive from the city centre - the best time to visit is between December and March, when snowfall is at its best. The area has two main ski resorts: Vall de Nuria and La Molina. Vall de Nuria can be accessed by a historic cogwheel train, and is perfect for beginners (and families with small children). La Molina, however, is best suited for experienced skiers with its tougher terrain. However, both offer unforgettable views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. So whether you're a beginner or a pro, Girona is definitely worth a visit.

Once you're here, check out the Jungfraujoch - the highest point in Europe that can be reached by train. You'll discover eye-catching views of the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the Alps. If you're feeling brave, take a walk on the glacier, or go tobogganing down one of its many slopes. And when you're ready to rest your weary legs, there are plenty of cosy cafes and restaurants to warm up in.

Rounding off our list of the best family ski resorts, we're heading back to Austria. It's not often a resort with gastronomy and 'spa cred' gains fame for its family skiing - Lech clearly doesn't play by the rules. For starters, the resort has everything, from wonderfully groomed blues for beginners to white knuckle off-piste adventures. The ski tuition here is top-notch, but don't let us lechture (sorry) you about it - try the Arlberg school for yourself. It's one of the oldest and most extensive ski schools in the world, and teaches children from the age of three in small groups.
