If you visit LA and don’t go for a hike, were you even really there? Trust us when we say a local would argue you weren’t. Working out is basically a religion in this place so roll out of bed, throw on your trainers and the best designer track pants you own (if you’re lacking in that department, Aviator Nation in Venice will sort you out) and get ready to hit the trails. Some of our favourite hiking spots include Runyon Canyon, Franklin Canyon and the Hollywood Sign hiking trails. For those who love sweating on holiday, Franklin Canyon’s Hastain Trail is a moderate to strenuous 2.3 miles roundtrip offering views as far as the Pacific Ocean on a clear day.

If you’re in the mood for something more laid-back, the main loop at Runyon Canyon is a good option. For the movie nerds buffs out there, try any of the Hollywood Sign trails for the best view of the iconic white letters now synonymous with the film industry. Some of the city’s most exclusive homes are in the nearby Hollywood Hills so keep your eyes peeled while you’re walking. And while you’re around these parts, don’t miss a stroll on Hollywood Boulevard. The walk of fame is a little cheesy but have you really ever met anyone who doesn’t like cheese?

Grab a delicious brunch

Of course, any trip to the City of Angels is incomplete without sampling LA's incredible food scene. Reward yourselves for feeling the burn with a delicious and optionally nutritious brunch. Though there can be a bit of a queue on weekend mornings, there is no spot like the iconic Fountain Coffee Room at the Beverly Hills Hotel. It’s an old fashioned soda fountain and diner dating back to 1949. Cozy up at the counter with the one you love and whatever you both decide to eat, make sure to share a pecan waffle for dessert.

Another great brunch spot is the elegant Republique where decadent pastries, spicy kimchi fried rice and more can be enjoyed beneath what must be some of the highest ceilings in the city. For something a bit more casual, nearby Sycamore Kitchen serves up tasty breakfast bowls, almond focaccia french toast and perfect coffee. But if you want to really do as the locals do on your Los Angeles itinerary for couples, opt for a liquid brunch. We’re in LA, so no, we don’t mean booze. Try a fresh pressed juice or smoothie at the Beverly Hills Juice Club where the whole juicing craze trend began.

Shop 'til you drop

You didn’t come all the way to LA to miss out on shopping in Beverly Hills, and neither did your credit card. Head to Rodeo Drive and get the party started. You’ll find all your favourite designer shops along the palm-tree lined sidewalks, so go ahead and collect shopping bags like you’re living out that scene from Pretty Woman (minus a few quite major character differences, not that we’re judging).

Next on your Los Angeles itinerary for couples is Abbot Kinney, an adorable and trendy street in Venice boasting some of the city’s best independent boutiques. Browse to your heart’s content and take in the cool crowd while doing so. If you need a caffeine boost right about now, try The Butcher’s Daughter. Once you’re ready to move on, grab an ice cream cone from Salt & Straw and stroll over to the beach with your love. Venice Beach is known for its eccentric characters, so soak it all up on the boardwalk as you buy kitschy souvenirs for your work colleagues or even your in-laws (if they have a sense of humour).

Watch the sunset

It's time to make your way to romantic sunset drinks and dinner. If you feel like splashing the cash, go all out and plan your date night at Nobu Malibu. Sip delicious cocktails as the waves crash below you and experience one of the most beautiful ocean views in LA. Watching the sun sink into the Pacific over mini lobster tacos and yellowtail jalapeño is not really an experience you want to go home without.

Another beautiful spot to impress your better half is Ivy at the Shore in Santa Monica. Request a table on the patio to catch the sunset, and enjoy killer drinks plus the best guacamole and homemade tortilla chips in town. The lobster tagliatelle here is also to die for, and an upscale way to have your own Lady and the Tramp moment. Have we mentioned we make lifelong dreams come true? After dinner, stroll down to the Santa Monica Pier where classic amusement park rides and games await. You’ll feel younger even just approaching the ferris wheel, and we’re told winning a stuffed animal for your partner may even de-age you a few years (hey, everything’s worth a try).
