The Netherlands isn’t all canals, clogs and coffee shops…but those things are pretty enticing, so let’s focus on them. Flat and beautiful, the country is made up of countless meadows of tulips (and other flowers, we feel obliged to add), as well as windmills and cheeses that are the envy of the world. Those lovely, lovely windmills. Quaint villages are dotted across the serene countryside, where you can get to know the locals and conjure up a feel for the old-world Dutchness of it all. We’ll be taking you (digitally and figuratively) through the diverse regions of this historic country, from North Holland and Zeeland to Gelderland and Friesland. So, whether it’s the chocolate and cheese or the Red Light District and canals that tempt you, here’s a look at the top places to visit in the Netherlands. And you can trust this guide too, because here at Plum Guide we pride ourselves on providing perfection in both accommodation and expert advice, so you're guaranteed a truly memorable trip away.

Amsterdam

It’s so ‘Dam popular that it has even become synonymous with the country of Holland (or the Netherlands) itself. Many visitors from across Europe are obsessed with this capital city, and with good reason. Flowing canals create a Venice of the North on its surface, with charming cafés and restaurants overlooking the water. A trip to the magnificent Rijksmuseum will teach you all about the development of the country, from the Middle Ages until the 1900s. Meanwhile, the Anne Frank House affords a glimpse into the darkness of humanity. To appreciate the beauty of the city, head up to the A’dam Lookout, and sit on the swing that almost goes off the cliff. Then, go for a picnic in the glorious Vondelpark.

North Holland (minus Amsterdam)

That’s right, there is so much more to enjoy about this beautiful and traditional country. By 'minus Amsterdam', what we really mean is the entirety of North Holland, the gorgeous region the capital finds itself in. Pick up some cheese in the famous market of Alkmaar, understand the country’s fascinating relationship with the sea in the Zuiderzee Museum, and admire the historic architecture in Haarlem - and no, this isn’t New Amsterdam (sorry, we mean New York). For something totally different, head out to the beach in Zandvoort.

Zeeland

Tucked in the southwestern corner of the country, Zeeland is one of the best places to visit in the Netherlands - not least because it has a remarkable selection of Plum Guide-approved homes from which to choose. Despite the influx of deluxe homes however, it’s also one of the least populated parts, allowing you to be alone with your thoughts amid the fascinating culture and beautiful nature. Hop from island to island in this almost-Flemish archipelago, where much of the terrain is below sea level. Visit the Iguana Reptile Zoo, the Town Hall, and the Boulevard van Vlissingen in the province’s namesake city.

Gelderland

Known as the Guelders in English (although Gelderland seems easier to pronounce to us), this province is a central hub of Holland that is known for its extensive array of museums. Drop in at the Netherlands Open Air Museum and the Museum Arnhem among many others in a bid to enhance your mind and knowledge. Watch a performance at the MUSIS hall in Arnhem and learn about the historic Battle of Arnhem. Cross the impressive John Frost Bridge and pay your respects at the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery.

Friesland

We’re now taking you right up north in our voyage to discover the best places to visit in the Netherlands. Splash the cash at the casino in Leeuwarden, and relax by its charming port. Spy the birds and relax in the parks on Schiermonnikoog island, which provides unforgettable views of the coast. Next, climb to the top of the lighthouse in Vlieland and go sailing in Harlingen.

South Holland

We’ve done Amsterdam and the North Holland province. It’s time to get back down south for this cultural hub. Cycle through the flower bulb fields of the countryside, and visit the historical sights of The Hague, where you’ll find the International Criminal Court. Hang out by the port of Rotterdam and appreciate its artistic and architectural gems, such as the Cube Houses and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
