The obvious choice – Ibiza Town is the capital of Ibiza. If this is your first time visiting Ibiza, then this is a great place to base yourself. With good transport links to both the airport and ferry terminals, Ibiza Town is highly convenient, with a fantastic mix of food, nightlife, beaches and everything in between. For a more authentic experience, stay in the old quarter of Dalt Vila. This 16th-century walled city sits just above the harbour and has a few gems to discover, like winding cobbled lanes and its Gothic cathedral. Alongside renowned restaurants and bars like the Pacha nightclub, there is also an eclectic mix of small boutiques and high-end fashion stores around Marina Botafoch.

Couples who like to let their hair down can’t miss Sant Jordi de Ses Salines. Just a short drive south of Ibiza Town, this neighbourhood is your ideal base if you want to be at the heart of the action. In fact, it’s just a four-minute drive to the airport from here, so you can land and be at the beach clubs in no time. Walk to Playa D’en Bossa, the longest stretch of beach in Ibiza, where DJs spin chilled-out beats during the day. Come nightfall, you’ll find renowned DJs playing to huge crowds in some of the best-known clubs, including Ushuaia and Hi Ibiza. Whether you’ll get any sleep around here is anyone’s guess.

Also known as San Antonio, this town is ideal for couples who want a good mix of beach and party. While quieter than Ibiza Town and Sant Jordi de Ses Salines, there’s still vibrant nightlife. During the day, sprawl out on the huge expanse of beach, which is backed by the town’s most famous attraction, the Sunset Strip. This promenade runs from the harbour to S’Arenal and Es Pouet (both lovely for swimming with their calm, shallow waters) and is also the main harbour for ferries to the Spanish mainland. Along the promenade are iconic Ibiza establishments like Cafe del Mar and Ibiza Rocks. With its location on the west coast of Ibiza, you can enjoy some of the best sunsets in the Mediterranean with your loved one.

The most northern bay on the island, Portinatx, started life as a tiny fishing village. To this day, it continues to be a much more laid-back town – the perfect place for couples looking for a more chilled-out experience. There are three spectacular beaches to choose from: the large S’Arenal Gros, Playa Porto and the more secluded S’Arenal Petit. All three offer plenty of restaurants, bars and sunbeds, so there’s no need to leave. If you fancy a break from sunbathing, there’s some amazing snorkelling and scuba diving to be had, or take a leisurely ferry ride down to San Antonio and Puerto de San Miguel to admire the coastline from the sea. Portinatx also offers some beautiful walks through nature, including one leading up to the highest lighthouse in the Balearics for incredible 360-degree views.

Sant Josep de sa Talaia is the municipality on the west coast of the island and one of the best areas when it comes to where to stay in Ibiza for couples. Offering a more authentic and serene side to the island, Sant Josep de sa Talaia is known for its stunning landscapes (including the highest point in Ibiza, Sa Talaia), as well as its traditional charm and a local community with a friendly atmosphere. Take a walk around the centre of town, strolling down the main street and exploring its adjacent cobbled alleyways. There’s a good choice of restaurants, bars and cafes, as well as boutiques and a local craft market once a week. The town has easy access to the many beaches you’re craving – Cala Jondal, Sa Caleta, Cala Tarida and Cala Moli are just a handful that we can recommend.

The pretty bay of Talamanca is a popular place to stay on the island – just one look at its sandy beach and crystal-clear waters, and you’ll understand why. When you’re not splashing about in the sea or jet-skiing in the bay, take a walk along the promenade, which boasts plenty of restaurants and cafes serving up delicious food – sampling the fresh seafood is a must while you’re here. What we love about Talamanca is that you can be as active or as idle as you want. The beach isn’t as rowdy as other towns on the island, and if you walk further away from the main strip, the beach can be surprisingly quiet. If you and your other half do decide to dance the night away, the nightclubs of Ibiza Town are just a short walk away.

Worlds away from Ibiza’s energetic party scene, the island’s charming interior is a landscape of vineyards, olive groves and tranquil villages. If you’ve been searching for somewhere to stay in Ibiza for couples where you can enjoy a slower pace of life, the centre of the island is a great choice. Spend long days cycling along peaceful country lanes, taking in the bucolic views of farmland and whitewashed churches. Wine lovers can visit the vineyards around the village of Sant Mateu d’Albarca, or pop by Santa Gertrudis, which has a big art community and a handful of galleries worth checking out. Being surrounded by farmland, this village is also quite a foodie destination, with interesting venues popping up all the time.

Once a hippy village in the 60s and 70s, San Carlos is now a bohemian favourite and its main street is lined by yoga studios, health food stores and vintage shops. For decades, the place to hang out has been the legendary Anita’s Bar, which was once the only place in the village with a telephone – in fact, you can still see the original phone booth in the bar as well as the mailboxes covering the wall. Just one kilometre away is Las Dalias where you’ll come across the original hippy markets with their brightly coloured stalls – shop for things like fashion, jewellery and handicrafts like paintings and leatherwear. On a hot day, take a short drive to Agua Blanca beach, with its golden sands and turquoise waters.

Located on Ibiza’s east coast, Santa Eulària des Riu is a firm favourite with low-key travellers. As well as being quieter, the town is a bit more refined compared with other places on the island, which is perfect for couples looking for something that little extra special. The main action happens on the seafront, where you’ll find sandy beaches galore, backed by a long promenade flanked by swaying palm trees and landscaped gardens. Take a walk inland to Puig de Missa, one of the most outstanding examples of fortified churches in Ibiza. Perched at the top of a hill, the whitewashed church offers romantic views of the coast.

The mini resort of Cala Llonga is a delightful place to base yourself in Ibiza. Surrounded by lush green hills, the resort has a secluded feel to it. Cala Llonga beach is one of the largest on the island, stretching 200 metres, so there’s plenty of space for beach volleyball (or to nurse a hangover). Aside from sunbathing and swimming, Cala Llonga also has diving schools and pedalos to keep you entertained and a good selection of eateries. Most of the nighttime entertainment here is low-key, but if you need a little more excitement, then it’s easy enough to get to the island’s trendiest bars and clubs.
