Found on the former site of Carlsberg brewery, it’s no wonder how Carlsberg Byen got its name. All production has now ceased and moved to a different part of Denmark, but many of the old buildings still stand and provide a historic antithesis to the many modern buildings that are cropping up all over. Some of the historic buildings are being repurposed, like TAP1, a former bottling plant turned event space, while Carlsberg’s most iconic structure, the Elephant Gate and Tower, will stand unchanged and continue to welcome anyone entering from the Søndermarken side. You might encounter some building works in Carlsberg Byen, it is, after all, still in the process of being turned into Copenhagen’s newest micro-neighbourhood with a focus on urban life and sustainable living.
