Gammel Strand and the surrounding area is the oldest in Copenhagen - and legend also has it that it’s one of the sunniest spots in Copenhagen. Located on the side of the scenic Slotsholmen Canal, Gammel Strand stands as a calming antidote to the hustle and bustle of the nearby Strøget, Copenhagen’s busiest shopping street. Unfortunately, few of the original structures on Gammel Strand and nearby Magstræde and Snaregade survived the 1795 fire - so what stands today is a mix of architectural styles that represents Copenhagen’s history. With breath-taking views of Thorvaldsen Museum and Christiansborg, it’s not hard to imagine why this is a popular place to live - in fact, it’s one of Indre By’s most expensive addresses. The streets behind Gammel Strand are also worth a visit, especially if you like sipping cocktails in funky bars on picture-perfect, cobble-stoned streets lined with brightly, colourful houses. It goes without saying that this neighbourhood is full of charm, but due to its proximity to popular nightlife, it also gets a bit noisy at night.
