Sitting within a 100-hectare estate that dates back to the 18th century, this marvellous home was once the residence of an important general during conflicts following the French Revolution. Given this impressive heritage, it's perhaps no surprise to learn that the interior still retains a sense of grandeur. However, don't confuse this with dusty and staid – as the locals might say, there's a joie de vivre to be discovered at the address.

Much of this is down to the interior design, which mixes together antique furnishings, bold print wallpaper and portraits hanging in every room. We love the lavish dining table set under a chandelier, but also appreciate the modern additions as well – we're fairly sure the aforementioned general didn't have the games room to keep him occupied while he was holed up here, but we're willing to stand corrected.

It's a similar story outside. The well-kempt gardens and rosebeds make for a charming backdrop as you stroll about the grounds, but you're also more than welcome to take a dip in the swimming pool or play a match or two of tennis on the private court. There's equipment for badminton or volleyball too if they're more your sport.

There's a lot to discover in the surrounding Vendée, as well. The sweeping beaches on the Pays de la Loire coastline start from as close as 30km away, while galleries and restaurants in the vibrant city of Nantes lie 43km to the north. A little closer to home, the nearest village is 2.5km away and has a pair of bakeries, a supermarket and a restaurant to tide you over.

This home is a wing within a stunning 13th-century chateau in the glorious Pays de Loire. It’s on the outskirts of the tiny village of Sèvremont so you can walk to a chemist, bakery and supermarket. But you may want to spend most of your time wandering the vast grounds of the chateau, dipping in and out of the shared swimming pool and gathering for lunch on the private terrace. Rooms are decked out as if for nobles of the 17th century with a charming library-like living room featuring a grand piano and a tapestry-lined dining room big enough for banquets. When it comes to gargantuan properties such as this one, it can sometimes be difficult to get the balance right with bedrooms and communal space, but this restored chalet just outside the village of Vernantes offers an elegant solution. Spread across three floors, there are a grand total of thirteen self-contained apartments, each with kitchens and living rooms. 

At the same time, there are some suitably lavish spaces in which to gather everybody together, from the grand banquet hall and a pair of central salons to the rather incredible outdoor space. In the vast grounds, there's a huge range of ways to fill up your time, whether you're paddling in the semi-heated swimming pool, walking around the twenty-two acres of forest or exploring the caves (with the help of a local guide). Added to that, the well-maintained French gardens are pretty to saunter about and you can even try your hand at petanque on the court, too.

There are a handful of bars and restaurants in local Vernantes, but there's a much wider choice in Saumer 19km away, or in the cities of Angers, Le Mans and Tours, which all take in the region of an hour to reach in the car. Even closer to the home, however, are the woods, vineyards and farmland in the Loire Valley, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Stay at this 19th century chateau in the Loire valley for an experience of history and extravagance. Large enough for family gatherings and celebrations with friends, the home is grandiose both inside and out. Small but perfectly formed, its open living space is partly divided with a handy kitchenette, a sofa and a dining table that could double as a desk if you'll be working during your stay. There's a calm and quiet main bedroom, a shower room and a special extra space up the open ladder stairs in the living room – a mezzanine that could easily sleep a third guest. Facing a courtyard, it's an oasis of calm that we think you'll love.
