Few things sounds more romantic than a cottage situated in the middle of wine country, where the endless vineyards sprawl and birds chirp. Perfect for a long-awaited holiday away from the kids or a getaway for a budding romance, the home is small but its surroundings are vast and baby-blue French shutters are ever-so charming. Escape right out to the private gardens from the pastel bedroom. After days lounging by the pool or drifting in the nearby river, take the bikes to one of two nearby towns to explore gothic churches and to pick up local delicacies like fresh truffles and a bottle (or two) of wine for enjoyment on the stone terrace. Intimacy is the emphasis here, and we can guarantee this home as a perfect start to a French-inspired love story. 

Gardenia

Although this home sits close to the centre of Bourdeaux – France's sixth-most populous city, no less – this home's cute facade would easily slot into a quiet corner of the surrounding wine-producing landscape. The patterned bricks, verandah and alfresco dining table on the decking all bring a taste of country living to this vibrant metropolis.

By contrast, the home's interior is a lot more contemporary than you might expect. Aside from the bright red sofa, the colour palette leans heavily on soothingly modern whites and greys. Decoration is sparse, but that's the current vogue for minimalism rather than neglect. We've got particular praise for the kitchen, which has a wealth of sleek surfaces for cooking up local ingredients. 

The local area has a residential feel, but guests are close to many of Bourdeaux's main attractions. Rue Sainte Catherine – one of the longest pedestrianised streets in Europe – is only 1km away and has a huge range of shops to peruse. There are characteristic cobbled streets and buildings in the historic district, only 1.5km from the front door.

A Drop of Red

You’ll find this wisteria-clad château on the banks of the River Lot, set within forty acres of woodland and landscaped gardens. The place boasts period furnishings, as well as a few modern luxuries – there’s a heated swimming pool, a cinema room, and a gym. When it comes to sleeping arrangements, the home is split into six separate suites – handy for families travelling together. After exploring the private grounds, why not go further afield? Nip across to the village of Penne-d'Agenais or hike over to the small fortified town of Pujols.

Riverbank Retreat

Situated in the southern Dordogne countryside, this villa, comprising a main house and a separate cottage, is ​​perfect for multigenerational family reunions and large friendly get-togethers. There’s plenty to keep the group entertained here, from a games room complete with a home cinema and bar to 15 acres of rolling meadows with a swimming pool and a boules court. Cook up a storm with seasonal produce picked from the vegetable garden, or why not sample the restaurants in Bergerac? A twenty-minute drive away.

A Song of Light

This newly renovated apartment in central Bordeaux, home to largest urban World Heritage Site, is perfect for couples and small families. Cute and quirky, this fabulous French home features a lovely, light filled open plan kitchen cum dining cum living room characterised by pops of red, contrasting coloured wall paper.  You’ll love waking up in your idiosyncratically decorated room for two, and delighting in a rain shower before breakfast in the white tiled kitchen. Read, relax or watch the world go by from the sofa next to the window while making a plan for the day. This home’s superb location in the semi-pedestrian Saint-Pierre district, the city’s historic heart, means you’ll be wandering the cobbled streets and stumbling across picturesque squares in no time. 

A stone’s throw from the best Bordeaux has to offer by way of museums and cultural heritage sites as well as restaurants and bars, why not plot a course through the Place du Parlement, the Place du Palais or the Place de la Bourse, before visiting CAPC, the musée d'art contemporain, Saint-André Cathedral, and the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux? You won’t want to miss out on sampling both Bordelais premiers crus and cuisine and vibrant Saint-Pierre hosts a sassy mix of traditional French kitchens, experimental neobistros, creative fusion restaurants, food trucks and barista-run coffee shops, a gastronomic scene that is sure to impress even the most discerning of bon vivants.


Paper, Prints & Pops of Colour

Situated in the Lot department, just south of the Dordogne River, this cosy 18th-century home is a wonderful place from which to explore the enchanting Occitanie region. 

Inside, original timber beams and stone walls have been lovingly restored to create a warm and inviting ambience. We loved the convivial living space with its squashy sofa and fully-equipped kitchen – ideal for those who like to flex their culinary muscles. When you’re not playing board games at the dining table, you’ll be out on the terrace, sipping a café au lait and watching the day pass by. 

Spend afternoons playing badminton before cooling off with a swim in the private pool. Later on, take the bicycles out for a spin through the surrounding countryside or why not jump in the car and explore the quaint medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda – it’s only a thirty-minute drive away. 

Clementine Cottage

Nestled away deep within vineyard country between the Garonne and Dordogne, Monségur is a quintessential bastide town full of medieval architecture and this impressive home is a suitably characterful place to stay if you're planning a visit.

It's a more recent addition to the locale than many of the nearby buildings, but there are still a few centuries of heritage in the walls and this sense of history has been expertly retained during a recent renovation, which prioritised traditional methods and materials. Take a wander throughout the ground floor and you'll spot antique furnishings, period features and elegant decorations evocative of years gone by. At the same time, guests are also treated to all of the amenities to be expected in the 21st century – we're talking sleek kitchens and bathrooms, plus plenty of tech and gizmos.

We've been saving the best until last, however. Out in the enclosed garden, it's pretty clear to see where long summer afternoons will be spent – flitting between the cooling waters of the swimming pool and the surrounding loungers. Of course, if the weather's on your side during your stay, there are plenty of wineries, abbeys and walking routes to explore in the surrounding Entre-Deux-Mers region, as well. The city of Bordeaux only takes an hour to reach by car, too.

Situated in the Golden Triangle, Bordeaux’s most prestigious district, this apartment is a refined and peaceful retreat in the heart of the city. Inside, it’s all parquet floors, full-length windows and timeless neutral shades. Begin your mornings in the light-filled dining area with buttery croissants picked up from the nearby boulangerie before nursing a café au lait on the sumptuous leather sofa. 

Spend afternoons ticking off the city’s most iconic locations – admire the masonry of the Cathédrale St-André, a Unesco World Heritage Site, just footsteps from your building. Visit the unique Miroir d'Eau and the ground-breaking La Cité du Vin, then stop for a bite to eat in a belle époque brasserie. 

Head home in the evening to put together a cheese board in your fully-equipped kitchen and reflect on the day’s events over a bottle of the region’s wine in the sophisticated living area. When it’s time to call it a night, beds dressed in crisp white linens ensure a deep and restful slumber. 

Tastes Like Gold

Tucked away in the countryside and surrounded by a moat, this restored 18th-century château offers complete privacy. Saying that, it's still just a five-minute drive from Villeréal’s restaurants, boulangeries and weekly market. The pool is heated and fenced with a pool house for shade, while the courtyard is perfect for gathering for meals under the trees. There’s lots to keep both kids and adults happy, with a games room, a fully-equipped gym, a football area and plenty of different living rooms to spread out in. Plus, if you’re coming with a bigger group, there’s a separate coach house apartment.

The Moated Château

Tucked away in the lush countryside of the Dordogne, in a hamlet between the medieval towns of Monpazier and Beaumont du Périgord, sits this beautiful home. The renovated farmhouse and cottage date back to the 16th century, and have been restored with so much love and care. The character of the buildings has been cherished – they’ve just been brought into the 21st century so you’ll have everything you might need during your stay. 

You can look forward to original beams, terracotta tiles, and a centuries-old larder and stone basin. An enormous fireplace with a wood burner keeps things oh so cosy – there’s no finer place to curl up with a glass of wine on chilly evenings. 

This charming home sits in 2.5 acres of gardens, with the scent of lavender and rosemary carrying in the breeze. The beautiful stone exterior of the farmhouse is decorated with clambering wisteria, roses and jasmine. It’s like something from a children’s story – a real idyll. There are peaceful corners where you can sit and enjoy a moment of tranquillity, revelling in the views. 

In the morning, stroll through the gardens and pick fruit from the trees. Sit in the sunshine for a breakfast of fresh nectarines, cherries and figs. The heated salt-water swimming pool has been positioned to benefit from the most glorious views, so we’d be spending much of our time there. When you’ve dozed in the sunshine and are ready for more action, you might take to the pétanque court, or perhaps you’ll play boules, badminton, football, or table tennis. You can even practice archery – there’s no chance of getting bored here. 

The jewel in the glittering crown of this home is the summer kitchen. Originally a barn, the outdoor kitchen now boasts a barbecue and a shaded space for you to host get-togethers. Languid lunches turn into evenings spent under the stars in this pretty and atmospheric space. You’ll never want to leave.  


Jasmine On Stone

Enjoy good times and quality wine with this modern apartment as your comfortable base in Bordeaux. Located in the city's historical centre, the space mixes modernity with old-fashioned charm through a combination of classic and new home furnishings. 

While the food and drink scene in Bordeaux is what makes the city so special, this spot gives you the option of cooking up your own delicious meals in the large kitchen and dining area. And then, after a long day of soaking up the city sights, why not soak in the bathtub with a glass of local wine in hand? Utter bliss.
