Situated in a picturesque part of North Wales, this cottage is perfect for a romantic retreat in peaceful surroundings. Sympathetically modernised but with original features showcasing the home's 19th-century origins, you’ll feel relaxation settle over you from the moment you first arrive. With underfloor heating in the open-plan living and dining area, you’ll welcome the warmth seeping through your slippers after a long day exploring the surrounding countryside. For added cosiness, light the fire, settle down on the sofa, uncork a bottle of red, and enjoy quality time with your loved one. 

As daylight creeps through your curtains in the mornings, hop out of bed (just mind the beams), rustle up a spot of breakfast and enjoy a morning coffee in your courtyard as the countryside wakes around you and happy birdsong fills the air. From your home, there are plenty of rural walks to enjoy – take a look at the maps and recommended routes provided in your cottage and you’ll soon be on your way. For a bite to eat, you may want to venture into Llangollen, where a great selection of delicious restaurants serves up local cuisine from their riverside location. 

Happy as a Lark

With stunning Clwydian Range views and plenty of things to do, it's hard to pinpoint this home's best feature – we loved it all. Your morning coffee comes with a view here, as many bedrooms step directly out onto the terrace, while the large alfresco dining area will be popular when the sun's out. Indoors, the games room and indoor swimming pool will compete for your attention during the day, and there's even a cosy cave bar for nightcaps. And although you'll feel far removed from the city here, you're just a few miles from several local pubs, and Wrexham and Chester are a quick drive if you want to explore.

The Countryside Retreat

Lovingly renovated and carefully restored, Clare and Paul have turned this barn into a contemporary but warm home. Expect bold florals in the main bedroom, inviting sink-in sofas in the living space and a fully-equipped kitchenette for cooked breakfasts on slow-start mornings.

One side of the barn overlooks rolling hills and patchwork fields, so you can watch the sheep grazing while you relax with a mug of tea on the royal blue loveseat. Then there’s the outside space, which boasts a hot tub for soothing tired muscles after long hikes through the Peaks and a seating area for cream tea in the sunshine.

If country walks are on the agenda, there are a number of public footpaths by your front door and the serene Combs Reservoir is a mere seven-minute walk away. If you’re keen to explore a little further afield, the charming spa town of Buxton is reached in fifteen minutes by car. And when the day draws to a close, sip a gin and tonic in a nearby pub before heading back to your pad to watch a purple dusk fall over the countryside.

Where Skylarks Sing

Built in 1809 and renovated in 2020, grade II-listed King Of The Vale brings together old and new for a wonderful experience in the Peak District. The striking Georgian cottage features beamed ceilings, traditional shutters, sash windows, wood-burning stoves and an impressive garden, all while providing guests with twenty-first-century comforts and design. Prepare wonderful meals in the fully equipped kitchen, then enjoy your creations al fresco or in the modern dining room. With four bedrooms, up to eight guests are welcome to enjoy the home's cosy interiors and excellent position in the charming village of Rowsley. From here, it's easy to visit all corners of the famous Peak District.

King Of The Vale

Situated within a Peak District estate, this 16th-century hunting tower was built for Bess of Hardwick, the ancestress of the Duke of Devonshire. This four-storey tower isn’t suitable for young children or guests with limited mobility – you’ll need to ascend the steep and winding staircase to reach all areas of this abode. Expect traditional features, with an AGA for cooking family favourites after a day exploring Chatsworth House. You’ll find a health club on the estate too, so speak to your host to arrange a spa session. After a few tennis games on the communal courts, unwind with a glass of red in the cosy sitting room. For local hikes, Curbar Edge and Froggatt Edge are a​​ fifteen-minute drive away.  

To the Tower

Staying at Bakewell Pudding is as much about experiencing your hosts' attentive service as it is about staying in a quaint cottage in a great location. A handy parking permit will be waiting for you on arrival, and while the space is a few minutes' walk to the front door, you'll get to start exploring the lovely village of Bakewell. You'll find independent coffeeshops and restaurants two minutes away, and your hosts will let you know their favourite ones too. The cottage is such a cosy space to return to and offers opportunities for unwinding both indoors and outdoors. Make use of the immaculate patio when the sun is shining, or retire inside for a relaxing evening by the the cracking fire. With the Peak District on your doorstep, you won't run out of activities to fill up your day. Hike the Monsal trail or plan a visit to Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall – there's something for everyone.

Bakewell Pudding

This blissful getaway in the Derbyshire countryside boasts spectacularly scenic views and an unrivalled level of tranquillity, the perfect place to unplug, unwind and rejuvenate amidst the abundance of local wildlife and nature. Set within 55 acres of private farmland, you'll find surrounding natural beauty in every direction that you look. Explore the gardens and fruit orchards on the grounds, where you'll find plenty of peaceful spots to meditate or do some yoga. The host even leaves yoga equipment inside for guests to use at their leisure. While you'll have plenty of privacy here, this place provides ample opportunity to socialise with the farm's flock of sheep, lambs, hens, and peacocks if you please. 

Inside, enjoy taking in the sweeping country views from the open-plan living area in style. Contemporary furnishings with a gorgeous green colour palette that nods to the surrounding flora and fauna present a calming space to feel at home in. Serve up homemade meals at the dining table after delightful days of discovering the local area. Relax in the private gardens, perfect for summer lunches and lawn games in the sunshine. Come evening time, there's no better spot than the fairy-light lit alcove to watch the sun set over the horizon. 

Nestled within ten minute's walking distance from the village of Rowsley, take afternoon strolls along the River Wye, or lace up your boots and hike to Nine Ladies Stone Circle on Stanton Moor. Further afield, you're just a ten-minute drive from the picturesque and historic market town of Bakewell, and five minutes from one of the country’s finest estates, Chatsworth House, home to an impressive art collection, beautiful gardens, water features and acres of park and woodland.

Peak Views

Dating back to the 19th century, this barn in the White Peak area of the Peak District has ben given a new lease of life in recent years. No longer used for farmyard storage, it's now a country getaway full of luxurious touches.

Save for the sections of exposed stonework, you wouldn't be able to guess this home's true age. The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors. The svelte rolltop bathtub upstairs is another way to get toasty and warm, too.

As you can probably guess from looking out through the glass doors to bucolic views of rolling countryside, you're not short of walking routes and picturesque scenic points in the immediate locale. The historic market town of Longnor only takes five minutes to reach in the car as well and offers a one pub, coffee shop & village shop. 

The Farmer's Husband

Walking into this beautiful cottage, you’d probably not be able to tell that it is over three-hundred-years old, or that it has a fair amount of experience as a coaching inn. Save for the exposed beams, brickwork, and basic structure, this home’s undergone a complete makeover that’s turned it into a very hospitable, little home. We, of course, love historic touches and found that the ones present here add a bucketload of charm to this home, and the choice of furnishings only further serves to make this space comfortable and inviting. Sink into the plush velvet sofa – by the way, we think the blue around the house brings a brilliant luxe contrast to the space – with the fire crackling at your feet as you catch up on your reading. 

Reading that can also be done outside when the weather is just right. Head out with a cup of coffee and embrace the peace and quiet, enjoying the view of the cathedral when you’ve put your book down for a quick break. 

Back inside, the kitchen – which features a beautiful aga cooker – connects to a dining room by the way of a conservatory, which makes even cooking a social affair as some guests can get breakfast ready whilst others bask in the light streaming in from up above. 

As if this home could get much better, it’s also very close to the famous Peak District National Park and a day out there, admiring the lakes and moors as you hike the round hills, is an absolute must. When you return too tired to cook, head to the local pub or chip shop for a quintessentially British end to your day.

Tideswell Cottage

This home is perfect for solo travellers or couples seeking a quiet base outside the Shrewsbury town centre. With a south-facing garden and space for alfresco dining, this home is a welcoming spot to unwind after a day strolling around The Quarry Park. The inside is simple and practical, with lots of room to relax – the kitchen is primed for home-cooked meals prepared with ingredients you picked up from Shrewsbury Market Hall. Location-wise, you’re within easy driving distance of the town centre’s restaurants, galleries and theatres. 

Shrewsbury Shrub

Although you’re surrounded by the fields and fells of Derbyshire’s peaceful countryside here, this family-sized home is just a fifteen-minute drive from the centre of Derby. You’ve got cycleways and walking trails on your doorstep, and museums of industry, galleries and a beautiful gothic cathedral to explore in nearby Derby.

On arrival, this place rises up like a striking, red-brick barn. The lawns are vast – perfect for kids that want to run around and let off steam. The back garden is home to a private hot tub for post-walk soaks and outdoor dining on the patio overlooking the bucolic Derbyshire scenery. 

Inside, the design embraces the country aesthetic with a wood-burning stove in the brick fireplace in the living room, arrow-slit windows showing how thick the stone walls are, and old wooden lintels on display in the sloped bedrooms. The kitchen is modern farmhouse-style with an island providing plenty of room to prep for big family meals, and the dining room is a delightful place to gather on plush velvet chairs. An added bonus is the deep soaking tub in the man bathroom – the ideal tonic for a day walking in the country.  

Sage the Owl

This cosy home is perfect for a family or group of friends looking for a comfortable and convenient base in Shropshire. The house is just a five-minute walk from the centre of Bridgnorth and the train station. You’ll be perfectly positioned to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge and the Royal Air Force Museum, and you can explore historic Shrewsbury and the Shropshire Hills. You’ll love the fireplace in chilly weather, and the pretty courtyard garden when it’s warmer. Bedroom three is suitable for children, as it’s set up with a single day-bed with a pull-out underneath.
