Nestled in the green Cheshire countryside, Wilmslow is a market town with oodles of charm. You'll find this apartment just fifteen minutes on foot from the centre, where designer boutiques, chic cafes and a slew of delicious eateries are sure to tickle your fancy. We think days here are best spent in the fresh air, whether you're roaming the country lanes or enjoying a pint in the local gastropub's beer garden. Best of all, it's a quick twenty minutes by train to Manchester – or forty-five by car if you prefer to drive – so you won't be far from the city buzz, either.  

One step through the front door and you'll feel right at home in this inviting apartment. The design is contemporary but still cosy – and nowhere is that more clear than the lounge. Big sash windows flood the space with light and a plush sectional sofa invites you to kick off your shoes and sprawl out. Home chefs should have plenty of room in the kitchen to whip up something delicious for dinner, or just nibble on snacks left in the welcome hamper if you can't be bothered to cook. Both bedrooms boast fabulous en-suites – our favourite is the main, with a lush soaker tub that's just the ticket after a long day on your feet.

Lovingly renovated and carefully restored, Clare and Paul have turned this barn into a contemporary but warm home. Expect bold florals in the main bedroom, inviting sink-in sofas in the living space and a fully-equipped kitchenette for cooked breakfasts on slow-start mornings.

One side of the barn overlooks rolling hills and patchwork fields, so you can watch the sheep grazing while you relax with a mug of tea on the royal blue loveseat. Then there’s the outside space, which boasts a hot tub for soothing tired muscles after long hikes through the Peaks and a seating area for cream tea in the sunshine.

If country walks are on the agenda, there are a number of public footpaths by your front door and the serene Combs Reservoir is a mere seven-minute walk away. If you’re keen to explore a little further afield, the charming spa town of Buxton is reached in fifteen minutes by car. And when the day draws to a close, sip a gin and tonic in a nearby pub before heading back to your pad to watch a purple dusk fall over the countryside.

Dating back to the 19th century, this barn in the White Peak area of the Peak District has ben given a new lease of life in recent years. No longer used for farmyard storage, it's now a country getaway full of luxurious touches.

Save for the sections of exposed stonework, you wouldn't be able to guess this home's true age. The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors. The svelte rolltop bathtub upstairs is another way to get toasty and warm, too.

As you can probably guess from looking out through the glass doors to bucolic views of rolling countryside, you're not short of walking routes and picturesque scenic points in the immediate locale. Inside, the wooden ceiling beams, exposed brickwork and stable door are full of rustic charm, while a log-burning fire and antique furnishings add an extra level of cosiness. To the side of the home, there's a patio area complete with alfresco seating where you can enjoy a coffee and the surrounding tranquillity of West Yorkshire. Fans of Last of the Summer Wine — one of the longest-running sitcoms in the world — will love walking around the local town of Holmfirth where it was filmed. After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. If the weather's playing ball, you can even eat outside, which will give you an opportunity to admire the bucolic scenery.

As well as this private patio and barbecue, there's a shared fire pit on the grounds around which to gather once darkness falls. Guests also get access to a shared games room, which has tables for ping-pong and pool, board games and toys, as well as a small shop selling meat from the surrounding farm and locally produced artisanal products.

Sitting deep within the Peak District, you're certainly not short of walking routes in the local area, plus a couple of historic attractions — Magpie Mine is only a ten-minute walk, for instance. And what would a rural getaway be without a charming pub? You'll probably be happy to hear that the closest one is only eight minutes away on foot.

This Grade-II listed Georgian townhouse in the historic Cheshire town of Congleton doesn't shortchange guests when it comes to rooms. As well as the generously sized bedrooms, there are also three separate living rooms and kitchens, many with log-burning fireplaces or — in the case of one — an Aga stove to keep your toes warm. As well as there being no shortage of space to socialise in the traditionally appointed interior, the home also benefits from two garden spaces, one with a hot tub large enough to accommodate eight guests on a warm summer's evening. This four-storey tower isn’t suitable for young children or guests with limited mobility – you’ll need to ascend the steep and winding staircase to reach all areas of this abode. Expect traditional features, with an AGA for cooking family favourites after a day exploring Chatsworth House. You’ll find a health club on the estate too, so speak to your host to arrange a spa session. After a few tennis games on the communal courts, unwind with a glass of red in the cosy sitting room. For local hikes, Curbar Edge and Froggatt Edge are a​​ fifteen-minute drive away.

Those with a head for heights might like to try their hand at rock climbing or hot air ballooning, while cycling and hiking are on offer for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground.
