Once a humble farm building back in the past, this home is now a Grade-II listed home surrounded by three acres of grounds and orchards in rural Cheshire.

Despite this sense of heritage, the interior is more contemporary in style, with stark white walls, a smart grey kitchen and a whirlpool tub in one of the bathrooms. Of course, it wouldn't feel like a real country getaway without a log-burner and there's one ready and waiting for chilly evenings in the living room.

If you're visiting during the warmer months, however, there's a private patio complete with a gas barbecue, as well as plenty of quiet spots out among the grounds. The hosts really make the most of this outdoor space and are happy to share their homemade produce — be it cider, apple juice or fresh eggs from the chickens that also call the address home.

It's fair to say that the home's location is isolated, but there are plenty of distractions if you look hard enough. Cyclists and walkers are fond of Bickerton Hill, which lies ten minutes' drive away, while the historic town of Chester only takes half an hour to reach in the car.

There's an awful lot to like about this Regency home, but to start with anything but the incredible location feels almost sacrilegious. Sitting on top of Chester's old walls and overlooking the River Dee, you'll spend countless hours on the rear terrace, dining and relaxing with this most scenic of backdrops.

That being said, the home's interior is quite impressive, too. The tall windows and high ceilings lend an innate grandeur, and this is only furthered by the contemporary design that gives classic tropes – chandeliers, wood-panelled bookshelves, copper bathtubs – a modern-day spin. The stunning kitchen and cosy living room complete with roaring fireplace are sure to be favourites among those with sophisticated tastes, but there's also a massive games room and home cinema to keep everybody entertained.

It’s worth noting there are steep stairs leading up to the main floor and the garden is shared with the owners, but there are plenty of quiet spots to discover and you will have access to a private hot tub (with views overlooking the orchard). To really capture the privacy and peace of your home, sit out on the garden bench and admire the stunning views. Situated in a quiet hamlet, the only sounds you'll hear are from the animals in the nearby fields.

If you'd prefer to get out and explore the nearby area, the encompassing landscape is blessed with numerous mountain biking trails. If two wheels aren't your scene, Bala is just four miles away and is an oasis of water sports, abseiling and kayaking.

Once you've explored the diverse scenery around your tranquil haven, visit the welcoming pubs and restaurants around Bala. For a real Welsh treat, a Michelin star restaurant resides up the road in Llandrillo.

Dating back to the 19th century, this barn in the White Peak area of the Peak District has ben given a new lease of life in recent years. No longer used for farmyard storage, it's now a country getaway full of luxurious touches.

Save for the sections of exposed stonework, you wouldn't be able to guess this home's true age. The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors. The svelte rolltop bathtub upstairs is another way to get toasty and warm, too.

As you can probably guess from looking out through the glass doors to bucolic views of rolling countryside, you're not short of walking routes and picturesque scenic points in the immediate locale. The historic market town of Longnor only takes five minutes to reach in the car as well and offers a one pub, coffee shop & village shop.

The house is just across the road from the beach, so each morning you’ll wake up to the sound of the sea gently rushing to shore. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room showcase the home’s prime beachfront location – if you’re anything like us, you’ll lose track of how long you spend gazing at the peaceful view. There’s a small garden at the front of the house, where you might enjoy a cuppa while watching the fishing boats in the distance, as well as a sunny patio at the back of the house, ideal for takeaway dinners of fish and chips after long days spent on the beach. 

When you’ve had your fill of sailing, swimming and sea fishing from the beach, there’s still plenty to explore nearby. You might like to bring your bikes and set off along the coastal track. Conwy and its gorgeous castle are just twelve minutes away by car, which makes for a lovely afternoon out. Pop into a cafe for lunch before visiting the castle and taking in the history. Snowdonia National Park is also within easy reach, so any hikers in your group will be happy – a thirty-two-minute drive will see you setting off on walks that guarantee gorgeous scenery.

But far from its transatlantic, urban sibling, this quaint village has stuck to its rustic roots. At the heart of the town, a five-minute walk from the golf club, four from the 13th century St. Michaels Church, and less than a minute from your nearest pub, this cottage is ready to welcome you home. As you arrive, its rugged stone exterior oozes rural, village charm. The white door beckons you inside, where underfloor heating allows you to explore every room in warmth and comfort. Its cosy, traditional lounge features a wood-burning stove and plump leather sofas – perfect for snuggling up with a classic novel as you sip hot chocolate. But on summer days, the conservatory at the back offers a modern, sunlit nook for sipping chilled pinot grigio. We love the stylish, bi-folding doors leading out to your private patio and courtyard. With picnic benches, a barbecue, alfresco dining table, plus a view of the aforementioned church, you’ll be spending every balmy afternoon in this idyllic spot.

Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

This home was once a hayloft in a former life — the original circular window on the front is so shaped for pitching hay through — but today it's a perfectly cosy space for a rural getaway. Despite this functional heritage, you can safely banish any thoughts of cramped living quarters. Illuminated by a series of skylights, guests get access to a recently refitted kitchen that is plenty big enough for cooking up hearty dinners, as well as a lounge with comfy furnishings for sprawling out upon after long country walks. There is no shortage of outdoor pursuits to undertake in North Shropshire and just across the Welsh border, including wandering along the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, only twenty-four minutes away in the car. The Boat House gastropub on the outskirts of Ellesmere is only six minutes' walk away, too.

With a south-facing garden and space for alfresco dining, this home is a welcoming spot to unwind after a day strolling around The Quarry Park. The inside is simple and practical, with lots of room to relax – the kitchen is primed for home-cooked meals prepared with ingredients you picked up from Shrewsbury Market Hall. Location-wise, you’re within easy driving distance of the town centre’s restaurants, galleries and theatres.

We're pretty sure that you won't find many cottages cuter than this. Built at the backend of the eighteenth century, this traditional weaver's house is Grade-II listed and you can see why. Inside, the wooden ceiling beams, exposed brickwork and stable door are full of rustic charm, while a log-burning fire and antique furnishings add an extra level of cosiness. To the side of the home, there's a patio area complete with alfresco seating where you can enjoy a coffee and the surrounding tranquillity of West Yorkshire. Fans of Last of the Summer Wine — one of the longest-running sitcoms in the world — will love walking around the local town of Holmfirth where it was filmed. The Peak District is only a ten-minute drive away too if you're in the mood for a long ramble.

In a secluded setting amid the valleys of the Peak District, this restored historic home offers a luxurious and unique stay for a large group, whether for a co-working retreat or a family reunion. Up to thirty guests can be accommodated, with ten sleeping in the curtained single beds in the attic room. You’ll be based in the idyllic village of Wildboarclough, with the River Dane surrounding the home on three sides – is there anything better than drifting off to sleep to the sound of rippling water? With wood-fired hot tubs, an indoor pool, and pizza ovens, you’ll have plenty to keep you entertained here.

The medieval town of Shrewsbury is the truly historic heart of Shropshire, with nearly 700 listed buildings in a town of just over 70,000 people. With such a striking skyline and such fine examples of 15th-century construction techniques, it’s no surprise that your home is another architectural marvel. This terraced house has been completely refurbished in a superbly modern fashion. Our favourite spot has to be the bright and airy open-plan living space. With its wonderful bi-folding doors, this clever design essentially removes the wall between your home and your south-facing courtyard garden (perfect for the unpredictable English weather). Mid-century furniture looks stylish in the lounge, while the roll-top tub up in the master en-suite brings a vintage edge to proceedings. For more on local history, take a stroll through town to reach Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery in just eighteen minutes. Another fantastic walk is along the River Severn. Your home is just three minutes from the riverbank, from where you can follow it all the way across the border to Wales. It’s definitely one for experienced hikers with a strong pair of boots though, at just over ten miles away.

In a fabulous position in the seaside town of Rhos-on-Sea, this top floor home isn't just stylish, it's an eco-conscious traveller’s dream. With a tumble of house plants, eclectic vintage furniture, wood floors and bohemian art, it's a world away from the typical nautical theme you often see on the coast. Grab a yoga mat for a stretch at sunrise, then cradle your coffee by the window, with views of Bryn Euryn Nature Reserve in one direction and Colwyn Bay in the other. Beautifully contrasting the white main room, the bedroom feels like an intimate retreat with its dark walls and canopy bed facing the panoramic sea view. Always with one eye on sustainability, the host has left a few treats to get you started in the sunny kitchen, along with eco cleaning products. Lovingly renovated and carefully restored, Clare and Paul have turned this barn into a contemporary but warm home. Expect bold florals in the main bedroom, inviting sink-in sofas in the living space and a fully-equipped kitchenette for cooked breakfasts on slow-start mornings.

One side of the barn overlooks rolling hills and patchwork fields, so you can watch the sheep grazing while you relax with a mug of tea on the royal blue loveseat. Then there’s the outside space, which boasts a hot tub for soothing tired muscles after long hikes through the Peaks and a seating area for cream tea in the sunshine.

If country walks are on the agenda, there are a number of public footpaths by your front door and the serene Combs Reservoir is a mere seven-minute walk away. If you’re keen to explore a little further afield, the charming spa town of Buxton is reached in fifteen minutes by car. And when the day draws to a close, sip a gin and tonic in a nearby pub before heading back to your pad to watch a purple dusk fall over the countryside.

This Grade-II listed Georgian townhouse in the historic Cheshire town of Congleton doesn't shortchange guests when it comes to rooms. As well as there being no shortage of space to socialise in the traditionally appointed interior, the home also benefits from two garden spaces, one with a hot tub large enough to accommodate eight guests on a warm summer's evening. If it's too cold to be frolicking about outside, there are plenty of chic bars and restaurants in the locale, some even on the street on which the house sits. However, rural outings are just as easy, too — the outer boundary of the Peak District can be reached in twelve minutes in the car, while Biddulph Grange Garden only takes eight.

Sitting in the middle of the tiny Snowdonian village of Dinas Mawddwy, this building was once the locale's Wesleyan chapel, but today it's been respectfully converted into a rather remarkable place to stay.

Plenty of the period features remain, including the original brickwork, pew seats at the dining table and the tall lancet windows that look out to Welsh hillsides, as well as bathing the interior with natural light. However, it's also fair to say that the living quarters have been brought up to the standards expected from 21st-century travellers, particularly in the case of the super-sleek kitchen and the large games room complete with tables for pool and foosball.

Despite this architectural setting, some of the biggest perks lie outside the stone walls. Not only is there a terrace on which to sit out around the fire pit, but guests are also treated to a hot tub, which is naturally the best seat from which to admire the stunning surroundings. 

It's fair to say that those fond of the great outdoors couldn't wish for a better location. Cader Idris is ten miles away if you're in the mood for a challenging hike, while it doesn't take too long to reach the coastline when the weather calls for a day on the beach. Closer to home – much closer in fact – the village has a local gastropub only a minute's walk from the front door.

Tucked away in the countryside surrounding Shrewsbury, this lovely cabin makes for an idyllic getaway for two. It can be found on the banks of River Perry, on the border between Wales and England. It’s set in grounds that also boast woodlands and access to the river, in a gloriously quiet spot amid beautiful countryside. 

There are excellent hikes to be enjoyed right from your doorstep, and it only takes forty-eight minutes to drive to the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where you can get up close to some pretty spectacular scenery. History buffs might want to visit Shrewsbury Castle, which is twenty-seven minutes away by car. There are pubs within a five-minute drive of the cabin, so after a day of the Great Outdoors you can sink back into a comfy chair by a roaring fire and enjoy a local pint. 

Of course, you might want to set up camp here in the cabin and not leave the grounds – it would be perfectly understandable. The tranquil private woodland creates a soothing backdrop for doing absolutely nothing. You might sit on the balcony and get stuck into a good book, or stroll along the river looking for ducks to feed. Perhaps you’ll fire up the barbecue in the late afternoon, ready for a relaxing evening in the cabin. When the sun starts to set, you’ll want to slip into the hot tub. Sip glasses of bubbly while soaking away your troubles, and look forward to being woken up by birdsong in the morning.
