If you like the idea of going eco-friendly for a while but don't want to completely give up on comforts, this cosy barn powered by renewable energy could just be a happy compromise. 

The renovated cob and stone property sits within six acres of idyllic riverside woodland and is built out of natural materials, including oak, lime, cob, pigmented clay plaster and locally sourced slate. Inside, there are a few rustic features, such as the exposed stonework and wood-burning fireplace, but otherwise, it's undeniably contemporary thanks to the conservatory, sleek kitchen and pristine bathrooms. The fact that it's powered by a wind turbine and a heat pump is pretty impressive, too.

Given the peace and tranquillity of the surrounding grounds, you'll be happy to hear that there's a natural swimming pool close to the home — shared only with the host, who lives on the site, and one other barn — as well as a barbecue and some spots for an alfresco feast. 

Although it feels like you're in splendid isolation at this address, you can head back to civilisation pretty swiftly if you wish. The town of Truro takes a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, while Perranporth Beach on the north and south Cornish coastlines can be reached in just under twenty-five.

Only a ten-minute drive from the cobbled streets of Polperro and the bustling harbour town of Looe, this studio apartment is a countryside hideaway. Part of a converted hotel, the home is set in the rolling fields of Cornwall. We love to run an evening bath in the outdoor tub and watch the sunset over the hills. The small plot is great for a solo stay or romantic retreat – with a comfy king-size bed and small kitchenette to cook up light meals and breakfasts. The hosts are particularly attentive and bursting with recommendations and helpful tips. Lace up your walking boots: there are paths to explore on the four acres of land the home is set on, or drive to the nearby South West Coast Path for tramps over coastal cliffs. On sunny days, it's a quick journey to Cornwall's most beautiful beaches. We love Lantic Bay, a sheltered cove that's only accessible by foot, for a sense of privacy. For dinner, it's best to head out and make the most of the abundance of seafood in this region.

The cabin is based just outside of Launceston in Cornwall, close to the border of Devon. It’s brilliantly located for outdoorsy adventures, whether you’re keen on surfing or prefer to explore the countryside on foot. Dartmoor National Park is twenty-seven minutes away by car, with its wealth of wonderful hikes and cycling trails. You might take a day-trip to St Isaac to paddle in the sea and eat fish and chips and ice cream at the shore – it takes forty-three minutes to drive there, and it’s well worth the trip. 

After a day of exploring Cornwall and its gems, you can look forward to sipping wine on the terrace. Perhaps you’ll cook dinner on the barbecue before enjoying a relaxing bubble bath in the beautiful copper tub. Or to take the romance to the next level, you might soak in the hot tub under the stars. Sitting in the middle of a thirty-acre farm in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this barn conversion is a fittingly impressive home for such an idyllic location. 

There are plenty of spots from which you can gaze out at the pretty meadows, woodland and the banks of the River Tamar that surround the address, whether that's out through the floor-to-ceiling windows that line the main living space or while seated on the roof terrace bordered by a leafy pergola. However, the home's interior is well worth your attention, too. Certain features have been retained from the building's industrious past, including wooden ceiling beams and exposed stonework, but otherwise, the design is bright and contemporary.

The number of amenities available to guests distinguishes this home from the pack. Not only is there a homely wood-burning stove in the main space, but there's a games room with a ping-pong table and darts board in a section that was once a cattle shed, plus lots of equipment for outdoor games beside the forecourt and lawned area. Here you will find tables, benches and additional seating for your exclusive use and space to stoke up barbecues and challenge the group to a variety of games.

Elsewhere on the site, there are the ruins of a silver and lead mine accompanied by the pumping engine house and smithy, part of the industrial landscape recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are other footpaths that lead off into the countryside, but you can also stroll down to the banks of the River Tamar, on which there's a two-hour window every day when it's safe to use it for water sports.

This cosy bungalow on Cornwall's northern coast is the perfect base for exploring as much or as little of this remarkable region as you please. Beautiful beaches, dramatic cliffs and stunning sunsets all await you in this charming county. Idyllic locations such as Padstow and St Ives can be reached in less than an hour, and the famed Eden Project is just a forty-five minute drive away.
 
On the other hand, Holywell Bay has one of the most beautiful beaches in the county. You’ll be pleased to know it's only a five-minute walk from your door, where alongside stunning scenery, you’ll find a gorgeous coastal path, and a handful of charming beachside cafes and eateries. Refuel on local produce at the Gull Rocks Bar & Coffee House at the beach’s entrance after an afternoon spent splashing about, and take in the stunning vistas afforded by its prime location. The Treguth Inn, hailing back to the thirteenth century also awaits just five minutes away, while several more traditional pubs and desirable restaurants can be found within a fifteen-minute drive. The choice is all yours. 

A short twenty-minute drive away is the Gannel Estuary, which separates neighbouring Crantock village from Newquay. Have a go at canoeing in the estuary, or try your hand at paddle-boarding over in Crantock. On quieter days, why not go for fish and chips followed by some ice cream in idyllic fishing villages such as Mevagissey, Mousehole or Gorran Haven, all within an hour's drive? Whatever you choose to do, you won't be short of fun.
  
Of course, such is the high-quality amenities, you don't even need to leave the house. An open living area is blessed with natural light and plenty of space, perfect for social evenings. Chill on the sofas, sit with a glass of beer on the kitchen bar or take to the circular table for dinner. We loved this home’s wooden deck – with stunning sea views, a dining table, barbecue, two loungers and Adirondacks facing the ocean, it’s fully equipped for time well-spent outside. Factor in that you’re less than a ten-minute walk from the beach and you have a real winner. Meander down the South West Coast Path to laidback Sennen Cove with its stretch of golden sand and tropical-blue water. Here Cornish fishermen brush shoulders with tousle-haired surfers. We recommend renting a board and catching a wave – there are two highly-rated surf schools in the area. When you return home, hit the outdoor shower and set your wetsuits to dry in the warm utility room before heading inside, where you’ll find it’s just as lovely as its surroundings – smart and minimal with touches of nautical chic. We especially love the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living area. Kick back on the sofas and play a board game or puzzle all together. Then gather around the light wood table for a feast before retiring to the bedrooms for some restful sleep, knowing there’s another beautiful seaside morning waiting for you when you awake.

Start off at Trevone Bay and work your way towards Harlyn Bay Beach, Treyarnon Bay and Pentire Steps Beach without driving more than twenty minutes out. Be sure to stop off at the beautiful Trevose Head Lighthouse along the way. 

Reflecting the beauty of its coastal surroundings, the inside of the home has a calm sense about it. Soft blues, crisp whites and wooden elements make the vibrant colours of the dining set pop, adding a quirky touch to an otherwise sophisticated space. Sit around the table to eat or take your meals outside for an alfresco experience around the picnic-style bench.

For a unique and unforgettable experience, stay in this operational lighthouse on the furthest point of Cornwall’s Roseland Peninsula. The sea views are second-to-none, whether that’s from the sunny patio or the detached observation room – complete with a fireplace for cosy storm watching. Seeing as this lighthouse is operational, expect to hear automatic fog signal on misty nights and see maintenance people from time to time. Other than that, the cottage is private with no public access. You’ll park in the National Trust car park – it’s a 300-metre steep path down to the cottage from there. Guests should also be aware that the home isn't suitable for children under 14, including babies. But there's a lot to love here. You even have easy access to a beautiful beach.

Part of an old farmhouse that's been braving the Cornish weather for over seven hundred years. Sitting outside in the morning sun of the east-facing courtyard makes you appreciate the old rugged stone façade, especially compared to the sleek and cosy interior. You'll get a whole wing to yourself, complete with two dining spots outdoors and comfortable loungers in the garden. In the colder months, you'll be spending more time in the sitting room, surrounded by books and a large flat-screen TV with Technics cinema sound for an immersive experience. For a bit more peace and quiet, escape to the reading room which has even more books available, or relax in the pleasantly quiet bedroom. From here, the French doors open up to a cosy spot for two where you can admire the sunrise and plan your day. The nearest wild beach is well within walking distance, but the headline attraction is up the road in Bude. If you're up for some sightseeing, take the car down to Tintagel to see the ruins of King Arthur's mythical castle.

You could sneak in through the back at this apartment in a Regency manor, but that would take away from the grand entrance worthy of a Jane Austen heroine. Sashaying through the double doors and across the marble floor, past the stone fireplace, you come to your abode. It’s in the old ballroom of the manor, and the floor-to-ceiling bays windows and gilded mirrors haven’t changed since the days of swishing gowns and music from the pianoforte (indeed, there’s still a grand piano in here). 

Rather than a bandstand, there’s now a kitchen at the head of the ballroom, and if you prefer your evenings slightly more intimate, a book-lined snug with a plush velvet sofa awaits in the bedroom. We love the hand-carved antique bed, waiting to see you off to the land of nod.

There are acres of grounds to explore on the estate, but if you want to get out and see the Cornish coast, it’s just a ten-minute drive to the beaches of St Ives Bay. The gallery-filled old fishing town of St Ives itself is just twenty minutes by car.

Lower Beach is our favourite, and it’s just an eighteen-minute walk from the house. Take along your bucket and spade and make memories in this most picturesque part of the UK. 

When you make your way back to the house, sun-kissed and sandy, fire up the barbecue. Spend your evening in the garden, admiring the views of the Camel Estuary and watching the sun slowly set. The garden is the jewel in the crown of this lovely home, with comfortable seating and bi-folding doors than can be opened wide to give the living space a holiday feel.

You'll have all the charming rustic touches you would hope for — exposed stone walls, a vaulted ceiling and a log burner — but there's a modern feel, and absolutely no chintz. You can slip into your own wood-fired hot tub just outside the back door, and the host has been thoughtful enough to provide a generous stack of logs to get you started. Meet the farm animals or set off alongside the private Nature Reserve to discover the private shingle beach on the River Tamar. Later, take advantage of some of the farm's other surprises — a communal games room with ping-pong, a shared tennis court, a hammock hidden away in the orchard, and a basketball hoop. With a number of extra activities also bookable, you can take part in a foraging workshop, try out stand-up paddleboarding or get involved in local wine tasting. Alternatively, you can drive to the port city of Plymouth in about forty minutes and visit the National Marine Aquarium.

We should mention that during periods of fog and mist, an automatic, electric fog signal sounds, but don't worry, ear plugs are provided. If that doesn’t faze you then, this magical setting within the Lizard Peninsular won’t disappoint. Cliff tops walks are on your doorstep and attractions such as Lands End and the beguiling Kynance Cove are nearby. The village of Lizard has shops, restaurants and a friendly pub only ¼ mile away too.

Sitting just above the sands of Boivsand Beach, you and your loved ones can make the most of your coastal location, while Plymouth’s bustling centre is just a short drive away. Everyone will be getting a good night’s rest here, courtesy of the comfy bedrooms, and come morning, welcome a new day with a cup of coffee out in the private garden overlooking the sea.

Breezy and bright, this home has quintessential English seaside written all over it. Whether you're here to top up your tan, hike breathtaking coastal paths or surf Fistral's world-class waves, you couldn't be more perfectly positioned to enjoy everything that Newquay has to offer. On arrival, it's hard to look past the view over the beach. So swing open the French doors, breathe in that sea air and listen to the sounds of the sea – the soundtrack to your stay. We loved the relaxed living spaces that made us nostalgic for childhood holidays to the Cornish coast. It's the ideal spot to sit back with your morning coffee as you plan what to do with your day. Of course, the beach offers something completely different depending on the weather. Blow away the cobwebs on a windy walk, brave a bracing dip, or soak up the sun on the sand. As for the surfing? That's a year-round pursuit. There's no such thing as cold water, just the wrong gear. And there are plenty of local surf shops that can kit you out. Away from the beach, the town beckons with an excellent selection of seafood restaurants and cool cafes with some classic Cornish fare too. Who doesn't love a pasty? Families will love the zoo and aquarium, while couples can enjoy the sunset from the comfort of a contemporary home with views to die for.
