If you like the idea of going eco-friendly for a while but don't want to completely give up on comforts, this cosy barn powered by renewable energy could just be a happy compromise. 

The renovated cob and stone property sits within six acres of idyllic riverside woodland and is built out of natural materials, including oak, lime, cob, pigmented clay plaster and locally sourced slate. Inside, there are a few rustic features, such as the exposed stonework and wood-burning fireplace, but otherwise, it's undeniably contemporary thanks to the conservatory, sleek kitchen and pristine bathrooms. The fact that it's powered by a wind turbine and a heat pump is pretty impressive, too.

Given the peace and tranquillity of the surrounding grounds, you'll be happy to hear that there's a natural swimming pool close to the home — shared only with the host, who lives on the site, and one other barn — as well as a barbecue and some spots for an alfresco feast. 

Although it feels like you're in splendid isolation at this address, you can head back to civilisation pretty swiftly if you wish. The town of Truro takes a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, while Perranporth Beach on the north and south Cornish coastlines can be reached in just under twenty-five.

We loved this home’s wooden deck – with stunning sea views, a dining table, barbecue, two loungers and Adirondacks facing the ocean, it’s fully equipped for time well-spent outside. Factor in that you’re less than a ten-minute walk from the beach and you have a real winner. Meander down the South West Coast Path to laidback Sennen Cove with its stretch of golden sand and tropical-blue water. Here Cornish fishermen brush shoulders with tousle-haired surfers. We recommend renting a board and catching a wave – there are two highly-rated surf schools in the area. When you return home, hit the outdoor shower and set your wetsuits to dry in the warm utility room before heading inside, where you’ll find it’s just as lovely as its surroundings – smart and minimal with touches of nautical chic. We especially love the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living area. Kick back on the sofas and play a board game or puzzle all together. Then gather around the light wood table for a feast before retiring to the bedrooms for some restful sleep, knowing there’s another beautiful seaside morning waiting for you when you awake.

We loved the relaxed living spaces that made us nostalgic for childhood holidays to the Cornish coast. It's the ideal spot to sit back with your morning coffee as you plan what to do with your day. Of course, the beach offers something completely different depending on the weather. Blow away the cobwebs on a windy walk, brave a bracing dip, or soak up the sun on the sand. As for the surfing? That's a year-round pursuit. There's no such thing as cold water, just the wrong gear. And there are plenty of local surf shops that can kit you out. Away from the beach, the town beckons with an excellent selection of seafood restaurants and cool cafes with some classic Cornish fare too. Who doesn't love a pasty? Families will love the zoo and aquarium, while couples can enjoy the sunset from the comfort of a contemporary home with views to die for.

Part of a converted hotel, the home is set in the rolling fields of Cornwall. We love to run an evening bath in the outdoor tub and watch the sunset over the hills. The small plot is great for a solo stay or romantic retreat – with a comfy king-size bed and small kitchenette to cook up light meals and breakfasts. The hosts are particularly attentive and bursting with recommendations and helpful tips. Lace up your walking boots: there are paths to explore on the four acres of land the home is set on, or drive to the nearby South West Coast Path for tramps over coastal cliffs. On sunny days, it's a quick journey to Cornwall's most beautiful beaches. We love Lantic Bay, a sheltered cove that's only accessible by foot, for a sense of privacy. For dinner, it's best to head out and make the most of the abundance of seafood in this region.

Step into this achingly romantic wooden hut in St Kew, Cornwall, for a whirlwind getaway unlike any other. Decorated in an eclectic, bohemian style, you’ll want to fire up the stove and sink right into a pile of embroidered cushions with a mug of hot chocolate. For the colder months, there’s a wood burner to cosy up in front of too. You can enjoy the wonderful vistas from outside as well in the large garden with its terraced seating area, perfect for watching the sun set. If you want to explore this stunning location, the South West Coast Path is just beyond the garden. Or spend the day on beautiful Praa Sands, 3 kilometres away. A little further afield there are attractions such as St Michael's Mount, The Minack Theatre and Penzance to discover.

It’s in the centre of Looe, just five minutes from the beach and a three-minute walk from the train station. A working fishing town, the immediate area is filled with restaurants and pubs serving the freshest catch of the day and there’s a town beach where soft sand slips into turquoise sea. 

The view from big, Victoriana windows is over the quayside of the East Looe River so you can watch boats putting in and out. This place may look like a grand, Victorian villa on the outside, but inside it’s pristine white and modern with vibrant pops of silky blue. An exposed stone fireplace still sits at the heart of the living room though, where French doors let the natural light stream in. Cook your own catch of the day in the ultra-modern kitchen which is big enough for several chefs to bustle around in.

The local coastline provides excellent surf and beautiful hiking trails, adored by local lovers of the outdoors. 

Ye Olde Church House

This bright four-story house has been designed with comfort and style in mind. Don’t be fooled by the ultra-modern, white facade; this place still retains a nod to its heritage with exposed stones from the original fisherman's cottage. In summer, light pours through the large windows and the log burner and underfloor heating keeps you cosy in the colder months. A crisp, white background lets the seaside watercolours on the wall speak for themselves and the big kitchen is more than spacious enough for the buzz of family breakfast time. On sunny days, head out to the wooden deck looking out to sea (with an outdoor heater available), or tuck yourself away on the dining terrace for an alfresco seafood feast from the local fishmonger.

Stood beside a 19th-century lighthouse on a headland between the sandy bays of Harlyn and Constantine, the location of this cottage makes quite a first impression. One of four holiday cottages within the estate, the panoramic views are spectacular from the communal gardens. Though if the weather doesn’t buck up, the vistas are just as dramatic sat around the dining table inside. When you’re ready to soak up the Cornish bustle, beloved Padstow is just four miles west. But be prepared to drive along a one-mile-long private narrow road first –⁠ all part of the adventure, we say.

It's clear that converting this traditional, award-winning stone barn into a luxury home has been a labour of love. Set across two floors, it's a warm and cosy space that's the ideal base for enjoying the scenic Cornish countryside. Start your first day with breakfast from some of the goodies provided by your lovely hosts. The open plan living space is the home's beating heart, dominated by beautifully restored original wooden beams that run along the vaulted ceiling, a lick of sophisticated red paint and a charming wood burner. We love the hot tub in the pretty garden – it’s the perfect place to unwind. The great outdoors is the real draw here. The home makes up part of a former Duchy of Cornwall daffodil farm – nowadays, chickens and ducks roam the grounds freely – and there are even Highland cows too. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – there are fantastic local walks (maps and wellies provided) on your doorstep. You can enjoy the amenities of the farm, too, including a tennis court, an orchard with a hammock, basketball hoop, woodland, and a private shingle beach right on the river – there are forty acres to explore in total. There's certainly plenty to keep you occupied here –  your hosts are Cornwall Wildlife Trust Members, which affords you access to wildlife education sessions for children, including mini-beast safaris, rock pooling events, and bird box making. You can also book a foraging workshop, stand-up paddleboarding, wine tasting, spa treatments, afternoon teas, suppers and more.
