From long soaks in the outdoor hot tub to board games by the fire and cosy movie nights (Sky is provided), there is plenty to keep everyone entertained. You will need to bring your own essentials, but the village shop is just a short walk away, plus there is a great pub – White Swan – within easy reach, though booking is essential during busy times. And for further explorations, follow nearby hiking trails, take the short drive to the coast, or hop on a train to get to Newcastle or Metrocentre within 5 minutes.

Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. The famous Alnwick Castle is just a short walk away, while the Northumberland coast is a thirteen-minute drive. In the evenings, forgo the home-cooking for a pint, delicious pub grub and live music at one of the cosy inns in town.

Steeped in history, this grand yet homely castle makes for a remarkably atmospheric base in the Scottish Borders. The seat of Clan Kerr, this 15th-century castle is known as Scotland’s frontier fortress. It’s set amid enchanting forests overlooking the River Jed, 2 miles south of Jedburgh. Some guests will sleep in the ground-floor wing, while others will fight over the romantic turret bedrooms. A wood-panelled turret library in the southwest tower is full of books and curiosities, and there are portraits of King James VI and the Kerr family dotted throughout the castle. For a real taste of historic Scotland, you won’t do better than this castle.

You'll be less than a five-minute walk from the glorious sands of Saltburn Beach at this home on the North Yorkshire coast, meaning it's ideally located for surf lessons, coastal walks, and hiking the Cleveland Way. If you did want to explore the undulating hills of the Yorkshire Dales, they're under half an hour away. You can take a few days to master the hillside or simply just spend an afternoon amidst the sea of green. 

Of course, you don't have to visit them at all – various walking trails decorate the landscape near your home. Simply set out in the mornings to discover the local rural charm.

When you're out in the nearby towns and villages, make sure to stop off for a quick pint at the cosy pubs. You can also find a selection of cute shops and authentic stores selling clothes, food and souvenirs.

Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. The vast size of the building and its grounds partially give the game away, but there's also something about how the communal areas are arranged, especially the pool table and bar that make it an especially sociable space.

You'll also get a sense of the home's heritage pretty quickly as well. Located on a farm that dates back to the 18th century, there's a strong rustic charm throughout the interior, from the wooden ceiling beams and stone archways to the open fireplace that's wonderful to retire next to after a long bout in the great outdoors. 

Speaking of which, there's a whole host of amenities on the grounds for when the forecast is being kind to you. As well as a large lawn and lots of equipment for playing games, there's plenty of seating for alfresco feasts, as well as a hot tub that's an idyllic spot for a nightcap, especially once the stars are out in the sky.

The Victorian spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea makes for an excellent seaside escape. It’s a real coastal retreat, surrounded by charming seaside towns and villages – you can use Saltburn as your base for exploring the area. 

This charming apartment is ideal for romantic getaways, and equally well suited to solo stays by the sea. We love the traditional beams and cosy, homey vibe. You’ll feel at home the instant you arrive at this stylish abode. Best of all, the apartment boasts sea views. Wake up each morning to see the sea rushing ashore. Step out onto the balcony to sip your morning coffee, and breathe in the sea air. The blue-tiled kitchen is a lovely spot for your meals, whether you’ve whipped up a cooked breakfast or are unwrapping fish and chips for your evening meal. 

It’s just a short walk down to the beach, where you can build sandcastles, skim stones, or even try out the surf. Saltburn is also home to the UK’s oldest functioning cliff lift – enjoy the ride down to the promenade. Later on, stroll along the 208-metre-long pier with an ice cream – we do love to be beside the sea.

Make sure to pack your walking shoes as this section of Northumberland is rife for rambling. A ten-minute drive away lies Belsay Hall, Castle & Gardens, while waterfront pubs along the River Tyne are about a twenty-minute drive. But if you'd like to pick up the pace, Newscastle is reachable in thirty minutes by car –  an excellent option for day trips.

This is a home steeped in history. Built in the early 1800s, it was a bank for over 100 years, before becoming an art gallery in the 2010s. The apartment has been beautifully converted to retain its original features which give it so much character. Enjoy your morning coffee while admiring the far-reaching views through the tall, arched windows or curl up with a book on the cosy velvet sofa.
