You'd be forgiven for thinking you're in the middle of the countryside but here you'll be just a short walk away from the city of Ripon, with its endless places to eat, drink and shop. Spend a day at the beach, a five-minute walk away or perhaps stroll along the pier and take the country’s oldest cliffside tram for a view over the town.

The living room is a delightful mix of mid-century style furniture and modernity. Think velvet scalloped chairs sitting alongside an L-shaped sofa big enough for the whole family. The wooden dining table can comfortably seat six people, and there’s additional room at the breakfast bar if you need it. Bedrooms are soothing spaces in neutral tones, inviting you for a quiet night’s sleep. 

Chill by the Sea

Located in the quaint Victorian Spa town of Saltburn, this home is a pretty wonderful example of the phrase ‘dynamite comes in small packages’. Sure, it’s a studio, but far roomier than you might expect, and actually rather perfect for a romantic getaway. Draw the curtains to let the light stream in and spend a lazy morning in bed with coffee and a crossword puzzle before finally dragging yourselves out of bed and into the kitchen for breakfast. Head out from there on a romantic walk through town and toward the promenade. 

There are also plenty of hiking options or walks through the maze of The Valley Gardens. If you’re not walking – arm in arm is best – then you can always hop in the car for a road trip with an epic playlist. After a meal at a romantic restaurant, snuggle on the coach with the fire crackling in the wood-burning stove, and just appreciate the space, the moment, and each other.

Out in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, this cosy cottage sits right between the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.

In the heart of Pickering, this stone charmer is just a six-minute walk from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Inside, wooden beams and ornamental fireplaces reflect the home's 200-year-old history, while two cosy lounges – including one with a log burner – provide plenty of space to sprawl out. We're especially fond of the rear garden, which is a sweet spot to enjoy a morning brew or an alfresco G&T. A huge perk is that this pad is pet-friendly, welcoming one well-behaved dog to join in on the fun. Despite the plain bedrooms and basic bathrooms, overall, we think it's a good option for families keen to explore North Yorkshire.

This Casterton cottage has lived many lives in its rich history, most notably as the school Charlotte Brontë and her sisters attended in the 1800s. To stay here is to stay in literary history. Recently renovated, the cottage has a new life as a home where high ceilings meets joyous splashes of colour and comfortable furnishings. All the home comforts are here, and the cottage is hugged by a charming little village. A five-minute drive away lies the historic market town of Kirkby Lonsdale, where you're sure to pick up charming souvenirs and fresh local produce. Further afield, take to the water at Lake Windermere, a half-hour drive from your front door.

Right on the outskirts of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and on the banks of the River Swale, this beautiful home certainly ticks the box for a picturesque setting. From near the house, you’re able to follow walking trails along the river, allowing you to unwind and rejuvenate in the fresh country air. But the home itself also offers plenty of opportunity for peace and quiet. 

Between striking colour choices, plush furniture, captivating art, and an outdoor area that offers sunshine and privacy in equal measure, you can find the space to sit quietly with a cup of coffee, throw your phone aside and enjoy a board game or puzzle, dine together at the beautifully made dining table, and lie in late. Treat yourself to a bubble bath and glass of wine, read in the kitchen nook, get competitive in the games room, and sit out after dark to admire the brightening night sky.   

Supply runs can be made in the little market town, where cobbled streets will lead you past cafes and artisans, with Richmond Castle always looming in the background. Pick up specialty cheeses, crackers and wine to take back for an alfresco cheese board, but not before visiting Richmond Castle and stopping off at the Georgian Sundials on the way back. 

As a Grade II listed building, there is undoubtedly plenty of history between the walls of this restored home, but staying here also gives you the opportunity to make your own.
