Seven minutes by car from Durham city centre, this former rectory plays host to a most luxurious home that feels a world away from urban life. At its heart, you’ll find local pubs, shops, and a bowling green, but a five-minute walk will take you up to your vast manor. Enter through majestic,  wrought-iron gates, up your private drive, to the bright blue front door – a cheery invitation to welcome you inside. With modern, velvet furniture in the living space illuminated by enormous bay windows, the gold detailing truly shimmers in the afternoon sun. Pad across the plush carpet to the flagstone floors of the kitchen, where you can rustle up a wholesome Sunday roast on the bottle-green Aga. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. The famous Alnwick Castle is just a short walk away, while the Northumberland coast is a thirteen-minute drive. In the evenings, forgo the home-cooking for a pint, delicious pub grub and live music at one of the cosy inns in town.

Relax with a soak in the lavish free-standing bathtub or rinse off under the rainfall shower. The living area is warm and incredibly comfortable. In the mornings, open the bi-fold doors and sip your coffee on the Juliet balcony, watching the ocean waves from the floor-to-ceiling windows. After a tasty breakfast rustled up in the blue kitchen, head up to the roof terrace to soak up the sunshine. Decked out with lush greeny and a barbecue, you'll want to spend every minute you're not at the beach sitting up here, enjoying alfresco meals and sipping cocktails as the sun sets over the water. Speaking of the sea, it's just a five-minute walk down to the beach or into town, where you can snack on fish and chips and grab a pint at one of the local pubs. Shopaholics can browse Saltburn-by-the-Sea's independent boutiques, keen hikers can walk along the Cleveland Way or for a more leisurely pace, just stroll along the Victorian pier, relishing in the salty sea air.

One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

As you brace yourself for the salty spray at the end of Saltburn-by-the-Sea’s iconic pier, wouldn’t it be lovely knowing that you’re a ten-minute walk from a comfortable and luxurious home? Wind back through the streets of town, passing quaint cafés and restaurants en route, until you end up at this fabulous apartment. Its grand living room is the perfect place to kick off your walking boots and sink into the plush sofas. With stylish, light-grey walls and original white cornicing on the ceilings, the decor allows some other features to really pop. The bright-green book cabinet beckons you to pick a classic novel. The flame-coloured chandelier invites you to spend a cosy evening under its glow. And you can even light up the elegant fireplace to beat the seaside chill with a whisky in hand. As for the morning, we recommend sitting out with an Earl Grey on your private balcony, before another adventure in the north of England. With Saltburn Station just a three-minute walk, you can explore the country whether or not you’re driving – but it’s also a joy to hike in these rolling hills and moorlands.

This charming apartment is ideal for romantic getaways, and equally well suited to solo stays by the sea. We love the traditional beams and cosy, homey vibe. You’ll feel at home the instant you arrive at this stylish abode. Best of all, the apartment boasts sea views. Wake up each morning to see the sea rushing ashore. Step out onto the balcony to sip your morning coffee, and breathe in the sea air. The blue-tiled kitchen is a lovely spot for your meals, whether you’ve whipped up a cooked breakfast or are unwrapping fish and chips for your evening meal. 

It’s just a short walk down to the beach, where you can build sandcastles, skim stones, or even try out the surf. Saltburn is also home to the UK’s oldest functioning cliff lift – enjoy the ride down to the promenade. Later on, stroll along the 208-metre-long pier with an ice cream – we do love to be beside the sea.

Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. The vast size of the building and its grounds partially give the game away, but there's also something about how the communal areas are arranged, especially the pool table and bar that make it an especially sociable space.

You'll also get a sense of the home's heritage pretty quickly as well. Located on a farm that dates back to the 18th century, there's a strong rustic charm throughout the interior, from the wooden ceiling beams and stone archways to the open fireplace that's wonderful to retire next to after a long bout in the great outdoors.

Those travelling with young children will love the playroom, chock-full of games and toys to keep them quiet for hours on end. There is billiards and table tennis in the outhouse if the big kids want to get involved, too. A boot room makes a no-stress entrance for muddy wellies after yomps through the surrounding countryside and the endless lawns call for picnics and croquet in the sunshine. Your nearest village is Piercebridge, situated three miles away, with its own farm shop and proper pub. Further afield, the Yorkshire Dales, Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Barnard Castle are all within a forty-five-minute drive – perfect for family days out in the fresh air.

Over 170 years old, this cottage awaits in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. While the scenic countryside abounds, Hawes puts market-town amenities on your doorstep. There's a small seating area on the patio for a sunset tipple, but we especially love the cosy interior. You'll receive a free bundle of logs for the fire, too. But remember to mind your head on the low beams. What's more, pets are welcome to stay, though they can't jump on the furniture or leave pawprints upstairs.

We fell in love with the orangery, which is the perfect space for cooking (or having someone cook for you) and feasting. And each of the bedrooms has a unique design, adding lovely variety to your stay. The home is also an ideal base for hikers looking for an inviting homestead to return to after a ramble in the Lake District or North Pennines, while the local village houses an award-winning country pub.

Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.

Located in a historic building – which was once old school rooms – this flat has been lovingly restored with high standard décor and furnishings throughout providing the perfect comfortable break. Start your days here with a cup of Yorkshire tea alfresco at the bistro table on warmer mornings before you head out and explore the area. 

A three-minute walk will bring you to the beautiful cobbled market square which offers an array of great food and drink options – whether you just want a short rest, a light lunch, or a delicious meal out in the evening. Visit Richmond Castle – reachable on foot within seven minutes, or watch a play at the Georgian Theatre Royal – a five-minute walk away. 

Stunning country walks are also on offer, with the Swale Waterfalls and river walk just ten minutes from your door on foot, or head further afield to the picturesque scenery of the Yorkshire Dales – a twenty-two-minute drive away. 

For dinnertime, you’re spoilt for choice with the Old Richmond Station – that has not only three cinema screens and an art gallery but also award-winning food and drink producers – a ten-minute walk away, or take advantage of the cookery books provided by your host and cook something new and delicious at home.

This is a home steeped in history. Built in the early 1800s, it was a bank for over 100 years, before becoming an art gallery in the 2010s. The apartment has been beautifully converted to retain its original features which give it so much character. Enjoy your morning coffee while admiring the far-reaching views through the tall, arched windows or curl up with a book on the cosy velvet sofa. It’s also a great home to entertain in, with the large marble dining table taking prime position in the open-plan living space. And of course, the location is fantastic too – within easy reach of Saltburn's shops, great fish restaurants, and beaches of the North Yorkshire coast.
