A converted chapel built in the 17th century, this cosy cottage has seen pastoral scenes in every sense of the word. Tall church-style windows are just one of the original architectural features you can see from the exterior. Admire this unique building from the comfort of the surrounding gardens, perhaps with an Earl Grey in hand beneath the weeping willow. Once you’ve taken in the panoramic views of the countryside and fells, step inside to be wowed yet again.

There’s a real romance to this stone cottage. A former byre, it’s stood on this land for 500 years and you can feel the history the moment you walk through the door. The owners have kept the layout much as it was when it was built, with the galleried bedroom created out of the former storage area that overlooked the byre. With thick walls of pink granite and lofty ceilings, it makes a dreamy bolthole for two or a young family. The location is hiking heaven, with the wonders of the Lake District on your doorstep. Days can be spent roaming some of the UK’s most dazzling scenery – much of which can be accessed on foot from the cottage. In the evenings, we can picture you sitting in the grassy paddock with a glass of something bubbly, looking out over the fells as the stars come out to play.

Situated at the southern end of Coniston Water, the fifth largest of the lakes, this barn conversion blends contemporary comfort with period details. The farm is believed to date back to the 17th century, and the surrounding landscape hasn't changed much in all that time. Lace up your hiking boots and follow any number of footpaths that pass right by the front door. Lake Bank pier is just ten minutes on foot and is perfect for summer swims, canoe launches and paddle boarding.  Alternatively, head north to Coniston Boating Centre for boat hire and trips on the beautifully restored Victorian steam-powered Gondola.

This converted barn is a hiker’s dream because, while it's nothing flashy, it's within waking distance of England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike. But not just that. You can also hike over to Wast Water, the most dramatic and deepest of the area's lakes, and to a number of stunning waterfalls. 

The home is the perfect place to relax after a full day of walking and exploring, with a cosy vibe, ancient wooden beams, and simple furnishings. There's even an original spy hole to be discovered upstairs. 

Kickstart your evening with a long bath before relaxing in the garden with a well-deserved beer or two. When the summer sun shines on the verdant garden, it's an idyllic place to watch the world peacefully go by. We loved the romance of sunset whilst the sky gradually turned to a gorgeous red.

The sleepy retreat is set in the village of Boot, a quaint collection of cobbled streets and sweet shops. There are a couple of nice pubs to try out too, and supplies can be picked up in Eskdale, a five-minute drive away.

This Lake District’s bolthole is all about the romance. The Romantic poets (including Wordsworth and Coleridge) did wax lyrical about this part of the UK, after all. And we think this 500-year-old stone cottage sitting in the shadow of Scafell Pike is an ideal retreat. It is delightfully cosy, with wooden beams and exposed stonework adding character and warmth. Outside, a riverside paddock is enclosed by those old stone walls the Lake District is famous for, and you can brunch at the picnic table overlooked by the fells. The large roll-top bath is perfect to soak your aching muscles, and the rustic charm of the bedroom especially welcoming after a day of mountain climbing. There are two pubs within walking distance and nothing but untamed country walks just beyond that.

Plus, the bustling market town of Ulverston, which holds a twice-weekly market, is a ten-minute drive away.

There aren’t many places that really embrace the away-from-it-all feel of the deepest darkest Lake District, and this one is housed on an estate once owned by the son of William Wordsworth. Fields fringed by drystone walls and hillsides dotted with sheep are home to walking and cycling trails right from your doorstep. The River Rothay flows right past the garden where fairytale-esque stepping stones connect you to the other side of the bank. Following the riverside walk, you’ll end up in the pretty village of Ambleside in twenty minutes where shops and cafés abound and watersports on Lake Windermere are on offer. The home itself is an eco getaway, housed in a circular stone building designed to blend into the fells behind it. Make the most of countryside views from the terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows. The open living room, kitchen and dining room is flooded with light during the day and the high-spec kitchen is a cook’s dream. Plus, there’s underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove to keep things cosy warm. At sundown, there’s no better place than the furnished patio for a tipple or two as the sky streaks orange and pink.

At Ullswater Lake, the second biggest in the Lake District, you’ll find a diverse range of landscapes and activities as you hike around its enormous perimeter. From the quaint village of Pooley Bridge, with traditional pubs and cute restaurants, take a fourteen-minute stroll to reach an altogether different scene – an isolated, romantic boathouse. As you arrive, its stone walls and wooden balcony look gloriously rustic. You could even plan to arrive by boat and pull up to the private jetty. From every angle, the surroundings of this home are striking – leafy trees, the glistening lake, and rolling mountains across the water make this setting feel quite special. Inside, the traditional theme continues with chunky beams and vintage furniture. We love the glossy, lacquered wooden pieces in the lounge, as well as the understated chandelier bringing a romantic glow in the evening. Take a look around while you wait for the wood-burning stove to heat up – the bedroom is quite magnificent. A luxurious cushioned headboard, freestanding copper bathtub, and private balcony set over the water are just a few of the fabulous features. Wrap up in your fluffy bathrobes and settle into lakeside living.

Tucked away in the Eskdale valley, this cosy cottage has the best of the Lake District at its feet. Inside, the wooden beams, brick walls and homespun furnishings have a lasting effect. It’s a warming and tranquil place, with sofas for curling up on when it’s pouring rain and a baby grand piano for sing-songs after a glass or two of wine. You’ll find plenty of modern touches, too – the brand new kitchen makes cooking a doddle and the recently installed bathtub is a treat for ramblers’ aching muscles. Outside, a sprawling lawn complete with dining set is ideal for barbecues in the sunshine. And once you’ve filled up on Cumbrian sausages and sticky Grasmere gingerbread, follow the higgledy-piggledy dry stone walls through wild countryside to the enchanting Stanley Ghyll Waterfall or jump in the car and take the scenic twenty-five-minute drive to Wast Water, England’s deepest lake. Before you make your way home to collapse into ridiculously comfortable beds, stop off at The Boot Inn for a well-deserved drink – it’s only a minute from your doorstep.

We dare you to find a traditional Yorkshire Dales cottage more charming than this, folks. Tucked away on the edge of a pretty green in the hamlet of Newby and close to the conservation village of Clapham, the setting is idyllic. When it’s time to dive into the great outdoors, you’re right beneath Ingleborough, one of the famous Three Peaks. Follow the countless bridle paths just moments away, leading to lakeside nature trails, mature woodlands, spectacular limestone caves, and eventually, the summit of Ingleborough.

Although it’s just a five-minute drive from the quaint town of Pooley Bridge, this home feels truly rural and isolated. Park up the 4x4 in the gravel drive and head into this warm and welcoming abode. Light up the wood-burning stove in the plush lounge, with its horseshoe sofa that can fit the entire family. Or you can even have your own private hideaway in the second sitting room, with yet another fireplace – this time a sleek, modern hearth set into the wall. When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

Once the dwelling of the estate's groundskeeper, this Lake District property has been refurbished to become a contemporary countryside getaway.

Inside, the design could definitely be described as minimalist, with walls painted in soothing whites adorned only by a few well-chosen pieces of artwork, a sleek kitchen and a preference for simple wooden furnishings. The wood-burning fireplace situated in an archway between the living room and dining area is sure to keep the whole ground floor warm and toasty.

But what about during those balmy months in which a roaring fire isn't necessary? The alfresco dining table on the terrace is sure to see some use during this time, as is the barbecue. You'll probably want to work up an appetite first, however, and there's an onsite heated swimming pool and an activity centre offering everything from watersports, 4x4 off-road driving, clay pigeon shooting, archery, axe-throwing or bushcraft.

If you're after something a little more sedate, there are plenty of walking routes that start from the site, including one to the cute village of Hawkshead about ninety minutes away on foot.

With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

This charming holiday home is located in the small village of Staveley-in-Cartmel in the Lake District National Park. You can set off on beautiful walks straight from the front door – Windermere is only a five-minute walk away. The characterful cottage has original features and is equipped with everything you might need for a cosy break in the Lakes. The small front garden boasts wonderful views of the surrounding fields and countryside and is a splendid spot for a post-hike drink. 

A Cosy Outlook

In a part of the UK with such stunning scenery, it really pays to have a home with some outdoor space here. Luckily, from this apartment's balcony, you get beautiful views of Lake Windermere and the hills surrounding the waters.

If it's ever too cold to use this space, you can head back inside and sit by the bay window, from which you get a similarly swoon-worthy panorama. Once you can tear your eyes away, you'll probably notice that the interior looks pretty modern — that's because it underwent a complete refurbishment in late 2021. The large kitchen and its collection of top-of-the-range appliances are particularly impressive, as are the pristine bathrooms.

When you're in the mood to see what the Lake District has to offer, you're in an excellent position to do so. Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is half an hour's walk away, while Rydal Cave can be reached in under ten minutes' drive. The nearby town of Ambleside has a cinema, cafes and even a Roman fort to explore, too.

The Lake District National Park is truly the beating heart of Cumbria. With its magnificent waterways and rugged mountains, this region really takes you into the wilderness of England. Near its central point, the village of Chapel Stile is a quiet and tranquil settlement in otherwise dramatic surroundings. Your cottage is around a ten-minute walk from its traditional high street, so you’ve always got the option of stopping in for a pint of local ale – that’s if the views don’t keep you at home.

This charming cottage is a perfect base in beautiful Ambleside. It’s a cosy home for four, ideal for a family or two couples. We love the log burner, which you can curl up beside after spending the day exploring the Great Outdoors – you can set off on excellent hikes right from the front door. There’s also a patio garden, a splendid spot for a glass of wine or a morning cuppa. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars nearby, and Lake Windermere is a short stroll away.
