This cottage sits in lush farmland around four miles from the bustling town of Millom, and just over twenty from majestic bodies of water like Lake Windermere – but we think your home is a landmark in its own right.

A converted chapel built in the 17th century, this cosy cottage has seen pastoral scenes in every sense of the word. Tall church-style windows are just one of the original architectural features you can see from the exterior. Admire this unique building from the comfort of the surrounding gardens, perhaps with an Earl Grey in hand beneath the weeping willow. Once you’ve taken in the panoramic views of the countryside and fells, step inside to be wowed yet again.

Chunky oak beams, exposed stonework, and slate floors are a rustic reminder of the home's history. But the layout feels distinctly modern. In this studio-like space, you can recline in bed or take a seat on modern, angular sofas upholstered in rich velvet fabric. Although less than six miles from Millom Beach, this country cottage still allows you to get easy access to destinations like Lakeside Landing on Windermere, twenty miles away. That said, with the striking views from your very own front door, you might not need to travel far for scenery.

The stone walls of this converted 17th-century farmhouse welcome you to rustic English life. With its quaint enclosed garden, you might fancy cucumber sandwiches on the lush lawn, or a picnic on the bench by the dripping ivy on the walls. And of course fell views and gorgeous pastoral panoramas.

Inside, plenty of original features have not only been kept, but lovingly resorted. Step inside to the cooling sensation of Lakeland slate flagstone floors, plus exposed oak beams, and a perfectly preserved inglenook with an iron log-burner. With fresh cream paint on the walls, and Scandi-style modern sofas, elements of 21st-century design bring a new lease of life to the home. And it’s a similar story upstairs, where the superbly stylish bathrooms boast a tub and rainfall shower – an even more relaxing approach to country living.

This converted barn is a hiker’s dream because, while it's nothing flashy, it's within waking distance of England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike. But not just that. You can also hike over to Wast Water, the most dramatic and deepest of the area's lakes, and to a number of stunning waterfalls. 

The home is the perfect place to relax after a full day of walking and exploring, with a cosy vibe, ancient wooden beams, and simple furnishings. There's even an original spy hole to be discovered upstairs. 

Kickstart your evening with a long bath before relaxing in the garden with a well-deserved beer or two. When the summer sun shines on the verdant garden, it's an idyllic place to watch the world peacefully go by. We loved the romance of sunset whilst the sky gradually turned to a gorgeous red.

The sleepy retreat is set in the village of Boot, a quaint collection of cobbled streets and sweet shops. There are a couple of nice pubs to try out too, and supplies can be picked up in Eskdale, a five-minute drive away.

Situated at the southern end of Coniston Water, the fifth largest of the lakes, this barn conversion blends contemporary comfort with period details. The farm is believed to date back to the 17th century, and the surrounding landscape hasn't changed much in all that time. Lace up your hiking boots and follow any number of footpaths that pass right by the front door. Lake Bank pier is just ten minutes on foot and is perfect for summer swims, canoe launches and paddle boarding.  Alternatively, head north to Coniston Boating Centre for boat hire and trips on the beautifully restored Victorian steam-powered Gondola.

If we had to be picky, we’d say the bathroom could do with a refresh, though it functions fine. The Cambrian Way passes by the front of the home, making the place ideal for walkers. Plus, the bustling market town of Ulverston, which holds a twice-weekly market, is a ten-minute drive away.

Seek out this traditional stone cottage in the heart of the Lake District National Park. Even though the home itself is 500 years old, it’s full of modern luxuries such as a brand-new country style kitchen and beautiful marble bathroom. These are offset nicely against the traditional features of exposed brick walls and original wooden beams. Located in a place of superlatives, not only is it within walking distance to England’s highest mountain, but also its deepest lake, steepest road, and the oldest working watermill. Before setting out to discover all of these delights, why not start the day with an invigorating dip in Stanley Ghyll waterfall, a twenty-minute drive away. After a day of exploring, get cosy in the snug as you make the most of the full Sky television package. You can even stream your favourite shows seamlessly through fibre-optic broadband. Personally, we prefer to just switch off from it all in the secret walled garden with sublime views over the fells. When night falls, cosy up in the warmth of the cottage and watch the stars come alive through the skylight windows.

Tucked away in the Eskdale valley, this cosy cottage has the best of the Lake District at its feet. Inside, the wooden beams, brick walls and homespun furnishings have a lasting effect. It’s a warming and tranquil place, with sofas for curling up on when it’s pouring rain and a baby grand piano for sing-songs after a glass or two of wine. You’ll find plenty of modern touches, too – the brand new kitchen makes cooking a doddle and the recently installed bathtub is a treat for ramblers’ aching muscles. Outside, a sprawling lawn complete with dining set is ideal for barbecues in the sunshine. And once you’ve filled up on Cumbrian sausages and sticky Grasmere gingerbread, follow the higgledy-piggledy dry stone walls through wild countryside to the enchanting Stanley Ghyll Waterfall or jump in the car and take the scenic twenty-five-minute drive to Wast Water, England’s deepest lake. Before you make your way home to collapse into ridiculously comfortable beds, stop off at The Boot Inn for a well-deserved drink – it’s only a minute from your doorstep.

Less than 500 metres from the shores of Lake Windermere, you’ll find this five-star barn conversion, set behind electric gates. Also, the vibrant village of Bowness is around 250 metres away, with its array of shops, tourist attractions, bars and restaurants. There’s a real romance to this stone cottage. A former byre, it’s stood on this land for 500 years and you can feel the history the moment you walk through the door. The owners have kept the layout much as it was when it was built, with the galleried bedroom created out of the former storage area that overlooked the byre. With thick walls of pink granite and lofty ceilings, it makes a dreamy bolthole for two or a young family. The location is hiking heaven, with the wonders of the Lake District on your doorstep. Days can be spent roaming some of the UK’s most dazzling scenery – much of which can be accessed on foot from the cottage. In the evenings, we can picture you sitting in the grassy paddock with a glass of something bubbly, looking out over the fells as the stars come out to play.

There aren’t many places that really embrace the away-from-it-all feel of the deepest darkest Lake District, and this one is housed on an estate once owned by the son of William Wordsworth. Fields fringed by drystone walls and hillsides dotted with sheep are home to walking and cycling trails right from your doorstep. The River Rothay flows right past the garden where fairytale-esque stepping stones connect you to the other side of the bank. Following the riverside walk, you’ll end up in the pretty village of Ambleside in twenty minutes where shops and cafés abound and watersports on Lake Windermere are on offer. The home itself is an eco getaway, housed in a circular stone building designed to blend into the fells behind it. Make the most of countryside views from the terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows. The open living room, kitchen and dining room is flooded with light during the day and the high-spec kitchen is a cook’s dream. Plus, there’s underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove to keep things cosy warm. At sundown, there’s no better place than the furnished patio for a tipple or two as the sky streaks orange and pink.

At Ullswater Lake, the second biggest in the Lake District, you’ll find a diverse range of landscapes and activities as you hike around its enormous perimeter. From the quaint village of Pooley Bridge, with traditional pubs and cute restaurants, take a fourteen-minute stroll to reach an altogether different scene – an isolated, romantic boathouse. As you arrive, its stone walls and wooden balcony look gloriously rustic. You could even plan to arrive by boat and pull up to the private jetty. From every angle, the surroundings of this home are striking – leafy trees, the glistening lake, and rolling mountains across the water make this setting feel quite special. Inside, the traditional theme continues with chunky beams and vintage furniture. We love the glossy, lacquered wooden pieces in the lounge, as well as the understated chandelier bringing a romantic glow in the evening. Take a look around while you wait for the wood-burning stove to heat up – the bedroom is quite magnificent. A luxurious cushioned headboard, freestanding copper bathtub, and private balcony set over the water are just a few of the fabulous features. This Lake District’s bolthole is all about the romance. The Romantic poets (including Wordsworth and Coleridge) did wax lyrical about this part of the UK, after all. And we think this 500-year-old stone cottage sitting in the shadow of Scafell Pike is an ideal retreat. It is delightfully cosy, with wooden beams and exposed stonework adding character and warmth. Outside, a riverside paddock is enclosed by those old stone walls the Lake District is famous for, and you can brunch at the picnic table overlooked by the fells. The large roll-top bath is perfect to soak your aching muscles, and the rustic charm of the bedroom especially welcoming after a day of mountain climbing. There are two pubs within walking distance and nothing but untamed country walks just beyond that.

Place yourselves in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park at this Victorian former mill owner's house. Kitted out with eleven bedrooms (ten en-suite, plus a large house bathroom) and a made-for-action kitchen (we're talking three ovens, two large induction hobs, two dishwashers and two wine fridges), it's prime for a large multi-generational family gathering. Add to that a cinema room, a snooker room, and a leisure suite with two side-by-side hot tubs outside, and there are plenty of reasons to linger here. Should you fancy a change of scene, the local village pub and shop in Sedbergh are within walking distance (half an hour on foot), and there are hiking trails, waterfalls, and caves begging to be explored.

Some of the Lake District’s most striking scenery can be found at Ullswater, with its mountainous landscape and unusual z-shaped, ‘ribbon lake’, which is the second largest in the region. But even better than simply visiting this beautiful spot, you can see it all from the windows of this lakeside home. Although it’s just a five-minute drive from the quaint town of Pooley Bridge, this home feels truly rural and isolated. Park up the 4x4 in the gravel drive and head into this warm and welcoming abode. Light up the wood-burning stove in the plush lounge, with its horseshoe sofa that can fit the entire family. Or you can even have your own private hideaway in the second sitting room, with yet another fireplace – this time a sleek, modern hearth set into the wall. For balmy English evenings, another space can be found outdoors, with your very own patio complete with comfy garden furniture. Alfresco drinking and dining will certainly be on the cards out here. While you can see the water from the comfort of your own home, it’s just a seven-minute walk down to Ullswater Marina.

Hopping over the babbling beck to reach the hidden gardens of this cute-as-a-button period cottage, you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd fallen head first into the pages of a Beatrix Potter classic. And that's all part of the charms of this riverside home, set just a few minutes walk from the pretty centre of Windermere village and a smidge further to bustling Bowness and Lake Windermere (a twenty-minute stroll). 

Inside, the cottage has been carefully and stylishly reimagined for elegant, modern living while retaining that all-important historic character. Spread out over three floors, it's deceptively spacious, too, despite its chocolate-box exterior. Upstairs, you'll find four bedrooms, each as beautiful as the next, with exposed beams, sloping roofs, and decorative fireplaces just like you imagined. While downstairs, you can spill out into the immaculate open-plan living and dining area with storybook armchairs crying out for an afternoon dose. 

But when the sun shines, it's outside in that glorious hidden garden where you'll want to be. Hop over the itsy-bitsy humpback bridge (game of poohsticks, anyone?) to soak up the sun from the sloping lawns or gather round for drinks on the riverside decking – it's your very own little oasis in the heart of Windemere.

The Babbling Beck

When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

With room for all ten of you to pile in, everyone’s invited for a stay at this loft apartment set in a handsome Lakeland stone building and offering up magnificent views of the surrounding hills.

For a home in a market town this quaint, inside the twin-level apartment feels surprisingly contemporary. Dazzling white from top to toe, with modern textiles adding a pop of colour, this place is anything but twee. Each vast bedroom spread out across the two floors is as pristine as the next and offer up impressive views of the higgledy-piggledy slate rooftops and craggy hilltops beyond. 

But the clincher here has to that vaulted ceiling living space on the second floor. Mighty exposed beams add the wow-factor and large skylights flood the room with natural daylight. With such vast space, it’s no surprise this apartment was historically the former gallery space of the Heaton Cooper family of artists. 

When you’re ready to soak up the gentle hustle and bustle of Ambleside, you won’t have far to go. Take your pick from the many bars, restaurants, and shops, including the beloved local landmark, Zeffirellis, for its lip-smacking pizza and pasta – all just a three-minute stroll away.

Then all that’s left to do is head for the fells for bracing walks around the spell bounding lakes – there are trails just a hop, skip, and a jump away. Or, for a classic Lakeland experience, hop on a boat to cruise Lake Windermere (a short stroll away).

This charming apartment is tucked away behind the main market square of Ambleside. It offers the luxury and comfort of a hotel suite with the privacy of a self-catering holiday home – it’s the best of both worlds. The apartment is cosy and warm, ideal for a romantic break in the Lake District. Set off on hikes straight from the front door, and enjoy the convenience of being within walking distance of many of Ambleside’s restaurants, bars, and shops. 

Rest Easy

Once the hunting lodge for the Duke of Norfolk, this home in the Cumbrian countryside has a sweeping view of Ullswater and the surrounding fells. To make the most of the vantage point, the open dining and living room is up on the top floor, so you can dine and recline with a sublime view – perfect with the wood-burner crackling away. The covered balcony was made for sunny days and the ground-floor bedrooms have French windows leading to a cobbled patio and lawn. You can walk to the edge of Ullswater, or perhaps explore the winding roads on two wheels – bicycle storage is included.

The Cumbrian Hearth

One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

Garden of Edenhall

Out in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, this cosy cottage sits right between the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.

This classic yet contemporary home is just a few minutes' walk from the centre of Ambleside and perfectly placed to capture a picturesque glimpse of the steeple of St Mary's Church rising above the trees. So sip your morning coffee on the balcony and take a minute to enjoy the charming view. Once you arrive and park the car, we love that there's little reason to move it again as you can find everything you need on your doorstep. However, if you do decide to explore further afield, the home is only a ten-minute drive from the head of Windermere, meaning that exploring the Lake District is as easy as hopping in the car with a picnic. And when you return from the day's adventures, stroll down to one of the country pubs for dinner and a restorative pint of ale, or simply flop down in that spacious living room.

You can't get much closer to Windermere than this – the shores of the mighty lake are right on your doorstep at this elegant five-bedroom country residence. And with access to a private jetty and mooring for a  boat, you can arrive in style here too.

Hidden away in the woodlands of an exclusive 5000-acre holiday estate, this home is perfect for groups looking for more privacy and peace during their Lake District stay. Spend days paddleboarding, lilo sunbathing, or wild swimming – you can always warm up in the hot tub afterward. But if you're more of a fair-weather swimmer, never fear – there's an indoor heated swimming pool (bookable) located on this estate, along with a playground and home farm shop with locally sourced goodies. 

When it's time to explore, there are so many walks in the area you'll be itching to get out. Or nip over to the historical Hawkshead, home to many adored restaurants and pubs – it's just a ten-minute drive away.

Back at home, behind the traditional Cumbrian stone walls, this period home offers pure modern luxury. The made-for-action kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up a feast (we're talking two ovens, two microwaves, and a welcome hamper stuffed with goodies). With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

Once a school, this home has kept many of its charming original features, from the oak floorboards to the arched windows with views over the gardens. Perfect for tranquil family breaks or a group of friends, the house has plenty of warm communal spaces, including a unique dining cubby for intimate dinners and a grand lounge with a toasty log-burning fire. On sunny days, nab a spot in the conservatory, which looks over River Lyvennet, or lounge in the gardens on the patio for al fresco drinks. Set in the small village of Crosby Ravensworth, the space is just a 300-metre stroll to the local pub, The Butchers Arms, which won a Good Food award in 2019.
