At Ullswater Lake, the second biggest in the Lake District, you’ll find a diverse range of landscapes and activities as you hike around its enormous perimeter. From the quaint village of Pooley Bridge, with traditional pubs and cute restaurants, take a fourteen-minute stroll to reach an altogether different scene – an isolated, romantic boathouse. As you arrive, its stone walls and wooden balcony look gloriously rustic. You could even plan to arrive by boat and pull up to the private jetty. From every angle, the surroundings of this home are striking – leafy trees, the glistening lake, and rolling mountains across the water make this setting feel quite special. Once the hunting lodge for the Duke of Norfolk, this home in the Cumbrian countryside has a sweeping view of Ullswater and the surrounding fells. To make the most of the vantage point, the open dining and living room is up on the top floor, so you can dine and recline with a sublime view – perfect with the wood-burner crackling away. The covered balcony was made for sunny days and the ground-floor bedrooms have French windows leading to a cobbled patio and lawn. You can walk to the edge of Ullswater, or perhaps explore the winding roads on two wheels – bicycle storage is included.

The Cumbrian Hearth

When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

Grass of Parnassus

Some of the Lake District’s most striking scenery can be found at Ullswater, with its mountainous landscape and unusual z-shaped, ‘ribbon lake’, which is the second largest in the region. But even better than simply visiting this beautiful spot, you can see it all from the windows of this lakeside home. Although it’s just a five-minute drive from the quaint town of Pooley Bridge, this home feels truly rural and isolated. Park up the 4x4 in the gravel drive and head into this warm and welcoming abode. Light up the wood-burning stove in the plush lounge, with its horseshoe sofa that can fit the entire family. Or you can even have your own private hideaway in the second sitting room, with yet another fireplace – this time a sleek, modern hearth set into the wall. For balmy English evenings, another space can be found outdoors, with your very own patio complete with comfy garden furniture. Alfresco drinking and dining will certainly be on the cards out here. While you can see the water from the comfort of your own home, it’s just a seven-minute walk down to Ullswater Marina.

With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

There’s a terrace for dining and relaxing, as well as a jetty where you can moor a boat or kayak. The interior of this home is impressive too with its designer furniture and ski lodge feel. A home cinema and a games room with a bespoke 8-foot pool table will keep everyone entertained. And all the bedrooms have floor-to-ceiling windows – two also have oval baths overlooking the lake. This place has been designed with total luxury in mind.

You can’t come to the Lake District without exploring the area – so have a stroll around Bowness-on-Windermere’s streets filled with boutiques, cafes, and pubs. One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

Out in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, this cosy cottage sits right between the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.

In a part of the UK with such stunning scenery, it really pays to have a home with some outdoor space here. Luckily, from this apartment's balcony, you get beautiful views of Lake Windermere and the hills surrounding the waters.

If it's ever too cold to use this space, you can head back inside and sit by the bay window, from which you get a similarly swoon-worthy panorama. Once you can tear your eyes away, you'll probably notice that the interior looks pretty modern — that's because it underwent a complete refurbishment in late 2021. The large kitchen and its collection of top-of-the-range appliances are particularly impressive, as are the pristine bathrooms.

When you're in the mood to see what the Lake District has to offer, you're in an excellent position to do so. Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is half an hour's walk away, while Rydal Cave can be reached in under ten minutes' drive. The nearby town of Ambleside has a cinema, cafes and even a Roman fort to explore, too.

It's easy to see why this stunning Georgian villa caught our eye – recently renovated, its chic interior exudes charm, garnering it plenty of attention and an appearance on national TV. We fell in love with the orangery, which is the perfect space for cooking (or having someone cook for you) and feasting. And each of the bedrooms has a unique design, adding lovely variety to your stay. The home is also an ideal base for hikers looking for an inviting homestead to return to after a ramble in the Lake District or North Pennines, while the local village houses an award-winning country pub.

The New Georgian Era

This classic yet contemporary home is just a few minutes' walk from the centre of Ambleside and perfectly placed to capture a picturesque glimpse of the steeple of St Mary's Church rising above the trees. So sip your morning coffee on the balcony and take a minute to enjoy the charming view. Once you arrive and park the car, we love that there's little reason to move it again as you can find everything you need on your doorstep. However, if you do decide to explore further afield, the home is only a ten-minute drive from the head of Windermere, meaning that exploring the Lake District is as easy as hopping in the car with a picnic. And when you return from the day's adventures, stroll down to one of the country pubs for dinner and a restorative pint of ale, or simply flop down in that spacious living room.

This charming cottage is a perfect base in beautiful Ambleside. It’s a cosy home for four, ideal for a family or two couples. We love the log burner, which you can curl up beside after spending the day exploring the Great Outdoors – you can set off on excellent hikes right from the front door. There’s also a patio garden, a splendid spot for a glass of wine or a morning cuppa. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars nearby, and Lake Windermere is a short stroll away.

Nestled deep in the countryside, Brownber Hall is a beautifully reimagined Victorian country home with enough space to accommodate up to fifteen guests. Thanks to your wonderful hosts, Peter and Amanda, the home has been lovingly restored over the last few years to create a space that is both traditional and completely of its time. With two large sitting rooms and eight bedrooms, there is plenty of space for everyone to spread out, or to come together for evenings filled with family games and memorable meals. The kitchen is fully equipped and thanks to its open floor plan, it’s also a wonderfully social space. Guests lucky enough to stay here can also enjoy the expansive garden. Equipped with a barbecue and a fire pit, it's a fabulous space in which to sit back and relax at the end of the day. Here you're situated just between the Dales and the Lakes, so it's a popular spot for keen walkers and lovers of a good country pub. Smardale Nature Reserve is just a ten-minute drive away, as is the village of Kirkby Stephen.

Much like the tea, this home is proper Yorkshire. From the flagstone floors to the original fireplaces and that beautiful purple AGA oven, this home exudes traditional charm. But fear not, a stay here is far from a trip back to the 18th-century; the wooden beams may be antique, but the games room and media system are all thoroughly modern. In the rural wilds of the Yorkshire Dales and close to the legendary Lake District, this four-bedroom home is a perfect escape for a big family or group of friends eager to explore the great outdoors - even if it’s just a stroll around the massive garden, and food and drinks on the patio. The nearest pub is a 5-minute drive away (or a leisurely 40-minute walk through the countryside), making for the ideal pint pitstop after a long day exploring the Dales. Back at the home, head to the garden and follow the sound of the rushing brook. Walk down the steps, and relax on the bank by the Clough River in perfect tranquility.

There's a small seating area on the patio for a sunset tipple, but we especially love the cosy interior. You'll receive a free bundle of logs for the fire, too. But remember to mind your head on the low beams. What's more, pets are welcome to stay, though they can't jump on the furniture or leave pawprints upstairs.

This comfortable and attractive home is perfect for a family seeking a special base for exploring the Lake District. It’s in the heart of Ambleside, close to shops, restaurants, and pubs, and within easy reach of Windermere. Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.

Kitted out with eleven bedrooms (ten en-suite, plus a large house bathroom) and a made-for-action kitchen (we're talking three ovens, two large induction hobs, two dishwashers and two wine fridges), it's prime for a large multi-generational family gathering. Add to that a cinema room, a snooker room, and a leisure suite with two side-by-side hot tubs outside, and there are plenty of reasons to linger here. Should you fancy a change of scene, the local village pub and shop in Sedbergh are within walking distance (half an hour on foot), and there are hiking trails, waterfalls, and caves begging to be explored.

Hopping over the babbling beck to reach the hidden gardens of this cute-as-a-button period cottage, you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd fallen head first into the pages of a Beatrix Potter classic. And that's all part of the charms of this riverside home, set just a few minutes walk from the pretty centre of Windermere village and a smidge further to bustling Bowness and Lake Windermere (a twenty-minute stroll). 

Inside, the cottage has been carefully and stylishly reimagined for elegant, modern living while retaining that all-important historic character. Spread out over three floors, it's deceptively spacious, too, despite its chocolate-box exterior. Upstairs, you'll find four bedrooms, each as beautiful as the next, with exposed beams, sloping roofs, and decorative fireplaces just like you imagined. While downstairs, you can spill out into the immaculate open-plan living and dining area with storybook armchairs crying out for an afternoon dose. 

But when the sun shines, it's outside in that glorious hidden garden where you'll want to be. Hop over the itsy-bitsy humpback bridge (game of poohsticks, anyone?) to soak up the sun from the sloping lawns or gather round for drinks on the riverside decking – it's your very own little oasis in the heart of Windemere.

The manicured gardens aren’t the only thing that caught our eye here. This renovated cottage in the Cumbrian countryside is a perfect family retreat. Start your day in the garden with coffee and end it with a glass of locally-produced cider. There’s plenty of space for your group here – including a main living room and a snug – both with fireplaces so you can keep cosy during the colder season. Here to hike the trails? Why not walk along Devils Bridge, into the wooded gorge and admire the impressive views of the 300ft Mynach Waterfalls?

Casterton Gardens

Set on a riverside estate that was once owned by William Wordsworth’s son, this eco cottage makes for an idyllic break in the Lake District. It’s all about lacing up those hiking boots here with country paths over hills and fells and a riverside walk taking you into Ambleside in twenty minutes. Just beyond the garden, a set of stepping stones take you across the River Rothay and into the land that’s inspired poets for centuries. The cottage itself has some cool eco-credentials – walls crafted from local slate and stone, a water supply fed by borehole and underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove providing the warmth. The curved facade has been designed to blend into the surrounding fells. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the open-plan living area and bedrooms invite the trees and fields inside and at the end of the day, an egg-shaped soaking tub is ready to soothe tired muscles in the master ensuite. The real bonus here is the patio, surrounded by the tranquillity of countryside vistas and the perfect spot for a morning coffee or evening drink. 

Waterside

Drystone walls snake across emerald-green fields and heather-clad hills dot the landscape of the Lake District. This old stone cottage is in the middle of it all, with walking trails across hills and fells leading right from the doorstep into the great outdoors. If you fancy heading for civilisation instead, Grasmere is a twenty-minute walk away with its selection of bars, restaurants and traditional country inns. After a day in your hiking boots, there’s nothing better than returning to the crackle of the wood-burning stove in this quaint little cottage, while admiring the timber-beamed ceiling above you. The kitchen is fully equipped to whip up any meal of the day, and there’s a bench outside for a sunny morning coffee. The real highlight here is the view. Stepping outside you’re surrounded by fields and fells, with nothing but the sound of sheep bleating in the distance and birds in the trees. Should the weather turn, you can enjoy this vista from the comfort of the living room, where a window seat makes for the ideal reading spot and underfloor heating keeps toes toasty warm.

Surrounded by a rich herbaceous garden, this rural farmhouse located in South Cumbria, close to the Lake District National Park, is picturesque. This charming home is in the Falls development in old Ambleside, just a five-minute walk from Ambleside yet in a remarkably peaceful setting. The home overlooks the Stockghyll Gorge, so the sound of water cascading down the rocks becomes the soundtrack to your stay – there are two terraces to enjoy this from, one of which has a barbecue.
