We loved the folding glass wall in particular – it overlooks the landscaped garden, and on warm days, you can open the doors and bring the outdoors inside. Spend days roaming the grounds and finish the evenings with a board game or family movie night in the lounge. Your hosts have considered every single detail, and the list of mod-cons feels endless – we're talking a popcorn maker, electric blackout blinds, power showers, no less than four Amazon echos, two smart TVs with Netflix, an Xbox One (complete with games) and a super high-spec kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a delicious dinner. During the winter, the underfloor heating protects toes from getting chilly, and there's a full summer kitchen with a gas barbecue and seating for eight on those long summer nights. In the former Lace Market, just fifteen minutes away on foot, there are plenty of pubs, restaurants and coffee shops where you can treat yourself if you don't feel like cooking. And, just a little further away you can find the iconic Old Market Square, with its imposing buildings and stone lions.

A Robin's Footsteps

The fact that you’re looking directly onto a meadow filled with sheep might tip you off that this home used to be a barn, but that’s about the only hint you’ll get. Through renovating this space, it’s become more of a modern cabin that just so happens to be in close proximity to livestock. The home is an alluring blend of rustic elements like the wood-burning stove and wooden beams, and modern fixtures like the sleek kitchen. Even though inside is where you’d want to be when there’s a bite in the air – how else would you warm yourself if not curled up with a good book next to the fire? – you’ll be hoping for agreeable weather so you can spend all your time outside. Not only is there a hot tub with your name on it, but dining, drinking, and snacking should be done alfresco whenever possible, in our opinion. For a compromise, you can always open the bi-fold doors whilst building puzzles at the bench-style dining table inside. 

If you’re around on Fridays, travel to the neighbouring town of Uppingham in time for their weekly market, and whilst you’re there you can also visit the art galleries and antique shops before grabbing a bite to eat. There are a number of more historical buildings that have been given a second life as wedding venues and are well worth a drive-by – Rockingham Castle and Castle View Farm & Stables are both five minutes away. Even better would be to hire, or bring your own, bicycles so you’re able to view these alongside other landmarks when making use of the many cycling routes around the area. 

The Rutland Barn

This beautiful, converted barn is the perfect place to relax and enjoy your holiday in the English countryside. The property is located in the village of Launde, which is situated in one of the most attractive and unspoilt areas of the country. The landscape is made up of rolling hills, pastures, small streams, woods and the ground flora provides magnificent displays in the spring and summer. The area is rich in history and wildlife and within close proximity to the beautiful market towns of Oakham and Uppingham.

Nottingham pads don’t come much more central than this. Just a five-minute walk from the Old Market Square and with countless shops and restaurants on its doorstep, you’ll be well placed to explore the best of the city’s sights. Such a prime location means some street noise is to be expected – but we reckon it’s a fair price to pay for being in the heart of the action. Apart from a private hot tub, tennis courts and a state-of-the-art barbecue station, there are woodland walks and lawn games to fill your days here. This old dairy, set on the Burghley Estate, is a peaceful getaway for large groups and makes a pretty picture for small celebrations. Throughout the restoration of the dairy and its conversion into cottages, an emphasis remained on the history of this building, and plenty of the original features remain to make this a charming and comfortable stay. With two wings, it also grants everyone plenty of space, though the mezzanine bedrooms can only be accessed through several ground-floor rooms, which might not feel the most private. Still, it's a beautiful space, and the estate is within the Capability Brown Parkland, first landscaped in the early 1700s and still as lush and inviting, perfect for walks with the dogs.

Save for the sections of exposed stonework, you wouldn't be able to guess this home's true age. The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors. As you can probably guess from looking out through the glass doors to bucolic views of rolling countryside, you're not short of walking routes and picturesque scenic points in the immediate locale. The historic market town of Longnor only takes five minutes to reach in the car as well and offers a one pub, coffee shop & village shop.

Fit for a romantic country break, this classic stone cottage sits in the rolling hills near Huddersfield. A ten-minute drive sees you in the confines of the Peak District – the UK’s oldest National Park – where walking trails weave across the landscape atop hills and past waterfalls. Ten minutes in the other direction, you’ll find the quaint town of Holmfirth to stock up on groceries and visit the local pubs and cafés. There’s a local pub and bakery a fifteen-minute stroll into the hamlet of Hepworth too.

After a day trekking in the Peaks, this is the perfect spot to put your feet up. Unlace your hiking boots and warm your toes by the wood-burning stove in the living room. ‘Cosy’ is the watchword here, with old wooden gables on display and thick stone walls keeping things warm once the stove gets going. There’s a little selection of holiday reads for evenings by the fire and a full kitchen for meals at home. In the sunny summer months, make use of the patio, furnished with a bistro table for two. From here, the only sound is the odd bleet from sheep in the field next door.

This charming apartment is tucked away in the heart of the Peak District. It’s the perfect base for a couple looking to spend a few romantic days away in the countryside. Beautiful Bakewell is a fourteen-minute drive, and Chatsworth House, with its rich history and stunning gardens, is eighteen minutes away.

In the evening, stroll thirteen minutes to the local pub for a pint by the roaring fire. You can dine there or back at the apartment, enjoying the cosy open-plan living and dining space. Later on, sink into the oh-so-comfortable bed – you’re guaranteed a peaceful night’s sleep here.

The building in which this apartment sits has had many functions in its near-two-century history — straw hat factory, corn merchants and estate agents to name a few. Today, however, you'll find a gloriously contemporary home that'll help you have an exemplary stay in Dunstable.

As you look around for the first time, you'll feel instantly at peace, something to do with the soothing greys used throughout. In the living room, a pair of purple sofas, parquet flooring and the chandelier make for a classy space in which to unwind, while the sleek corner kitchen is plenty big enough for cooking up special dinners.

As is the case with many period properties, there's an inordinate amount of natural light from the tall (triple glazed) windows — what else were you to do before the widespread introduction of electric lighting? — but you can also head down to the building's communal courtyard for your fix of Vitamin D, too. There's seating and a table, as well as free Pashley Cycle hire for the duration of your stay.

In local Dunstable, there are enough restaurants and cafes to keep you going, and there's a wealth of attractions that are easily reached nearby. London is only an hour away by train, but slightly closer to home, the Chiltern Hills AONB is rich with walking routes and historic sites — Ashridge Estate is twenty minutes' drive, for instance.
