Stepping inside, you'll find pearly white walls, ceilings and stone floors, while the log burner and wooden beams overhead keep things extra cosy. Explore the rolling green fields of the Peak District National Park right on your doorstep, or enjoy a morning walk through the village, passing cheery pubs, bistros, fish and chip shops and quaint little tea rooms. Stop off for a classic scone with jam and clotted cream or tuck into a full English breakfast close by or visit the award-winning restaurant 'The Merchant's Yard' for a special occasion. This old dairy, set on the Burghley Estate, is a peaceful getaway for large groups and makes a pretty picture for small celebrations. Throughout the restoration of the dairy and its conversion into cottages, an emphasis remained on the history of this building, and plenty of the original features remain to make this a charming and comfortable stay. With two wings, it also grants everyone plenty of space, though the mezzanine bedrooms can only be accessed through several ground-floor rooms, which might not feel the most private. Still, it's a beautiful space, and the estate is within the Capability Brown Parkland, first landscaped in the early 1700s and still as lush and inviting, perfect for walks with the dogs.

Dating back to the 19th century, this barn in the White Peak area of the Peak District has ben given a new lease of life in recent years. No longer used for farmyard storage, it's now a country getaway full of luxurious touches.

Save for the sections of exposed stonework, you wouldn't be able to guess this home's true age. The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors. The svelte rolltop bathtub upstairs is another way to get toasty and warm, too.

As you can probably guess from looking out through the glass doors to bucolic views of rolling countryside, you're not short of walking routes and picturesque scenic points in the immediate locale. Recently restored, you can tell how much love and care has been put into this stunning space that blends beautiful modern comforts with characterful original details to create an unforgettable home. From the underfloor heating to the wood-burning stove, romantic roll-top tub and sweeping views of the Peak District fields and valleys, there’s a storybook warmth and cosiness here that instantly makes you feel welcome. If you can ever peel yourself away from this magical gem, Newark historic market town – known for its indie shops, antiques and old buildings – is only a fifteen-minute drive from your door. Found in the centre of town, a thirteen-minute walk from Lincoln's iconic Cathedral, this large family home has been restored with comfort and style in mind. Especially so, given the size of the two lounges. Add the dining area into the equation, and you can see how there's plenty of room for everyone to carve out their own space. Two pull-out beds and two single sofa beds keep sleeping arrangements flexible, although these are best for children as they're on the smaller side.

Nearby, Grafham Water offers more opportunities to get out on the water, either at the sailing club or the giant inflatable water park.

This unique home was a bakery in the 1950s but it was converted by the host's parents, who both worked at the Lincoln School of Art. As well as being a day job, they also had a strong interest in artistic endeavours and they filled the interior with hand-crafted ceramics, fabrics and paintings. Today, much of their collection remains and it lends the feel of part-museum, part-period home — especially with the hardwood floors and wood-burning fireplace. The large garden is equally special too, with a pond full of frogs and plenty of lawn space on which to lie back with a book borrowed from the packed shelves in the dining room. When you fancy exploring your surroundings, the city of Lincoln is thirteen minutes away in the car, while the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty. Closer to home, there's a pub two minutes' walk around the corner.

The host even leaves yoga equipment inside for guests to use at their leisure. While you'll have plenty of privacy here, this place provides ample opportunity to socialise with the farm's flock of sheep, lambs, hens, and peacocks if you please. 

Inside, enjoy taking in the sweeping country views from the open-plan living area in style. Contemporary furnishings with a gorgeous green colour palette that nods to the surrounding flora and fauna present a calming space to feel at home in. Serve up homemade meals at the dining table after delightful days of discovering the local area. Relax in the private gardens, perfect for summer lunches and lawn games in the sunshine. Come evening time, there's no better spot than the fairy-light lit alcove to watch the sun set over the horizon.

Peak Views

After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. If the weather's playing ball, you can even eat outside, which will give you an opportunity to admire the bucolic scenery.

As well as this private patio and barbecue, there's a shared fire pit on the grounds around which to gather once darkness falls. Guests also get access to a shared games room, which has tables for ping-pong and pool, board games and toys, as well as a small shop selling meat from the surrounding farm and locally produced artisanal products.

Sitting deep within the Peak District, you're certainly not short of walking routes in the local area, plus a couple of historic attractions — Magpie Mine is only a ten-minute walk, for instance. And what would a rural getaway be without a charming pub? You'll probably be happy to hear that the closest one is only eight minutes away on foot.

With 5 acres at your disposal, this rustic cottage in the Peak District is the ideal escape for anyone looking to indulge in a slice of rural peace. Not so rural, however, that you can’t easily nip into the Georgian gem that is Ashbourne. Explore the local coffee shops and markets whilst you’re there by strolling the cobbled streets and admiring the architecture. The award-winning Callow Hall is five minutes away, and Thor’s Cave – one of the beautiful hiking trails of the area – can be found at the other end of a twenty-minute drive. 

But we bet we had you at rural peace, didn’t we? You’d be right to embrace it and there’s no better way than soaking up all that quiet from your position on the sunlounger. In the summer months, you can ward off the heat by slipping into the beautifully clear, private pool. Autumn and spring would best be spent strolling the large garden – you might even pack a basket and thermos for an impromptu picnic when you find a spot that you’re particularly drawn to. 

Select one of the books in the library and curl up with it on the leather sofa, only getting up to top off your coffee. Evenings can be spent watching a movie in front of the crackling fire or by playing board games – just as long as you don’t forget the cocoa. If it’s not too nippy out yet, you might also find an alfresco meal at sunset to be one of your favourite moments of the day.

Bentley Brook Cottage

Staying at Bakewell Pudding is as much about experiencing your hosts' attentive service as it is about staying in a quaint cottage in a great location. A handy parking permit will be waiting for you on arrival, and while the space is a few minutes' walk to the front door, you'll get to start exploring the lovely village of Bakewell. You'll find independent coffeeshops and restaurants two minutes away, and your hosts will let you know their favourite ones too. The cottage is such a cosy space to return to and offers opportunities for unwinding both indoors and outdoors. Make use of the immaculate patio when the sun is shining, or retire inside for a relaxing evening by the the cracking fire. With the Peak District on your doorstep, you won't run out of activities to fill up your day. Hike the Monsal trail or plan a visit to Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall – there's something for everyone.

Bakewell Pudding

It was game, set and match when we saw this elegant 16th Century grange situated on a quiet lane in the heart of Shakespeare country. Play a spot of tennis on the private courts surrounded by beautiful countryside, have a wander around the formal gardens or picnic on the sweeping lawns. Later, read a book in the hanging tree pod or spot the wildlife around the natural swimming lake. There are lovely sunny patios for alfresco dining, too.

If you want a quiet spot, read the newspapers in the garden room with its botanical print wallpaper, purple sofas and chaise longue. South and west-facing windows create a bright and cheerful space. One of our favourite rooms has to be the orangery with its four sets of double doors, glass lantern roof, swan neck chandelier and long refectory style table primed for convivial, lazy brunches.

There's so much house here – we haven't even mentioned the elegant bedrooms – there are canopied beds, four posters, antiques and designer wallpaper aplenty.

This home is surrounded by some wonderful walks. Ancient Hay Wood is under 7 miles away or culture lovers can head to Stratford-upon-Avon for a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Food lovers, on the other hand, are catered for in Henley-on-Arden, where there are some charming restaurants to discover. Or just relax in the local pub –  there are two friendly ones within a thirty-minute stroll.




The Village Retreat

This beautifully renovated barn is situated in a stunning, secluded position on the edge of Long Itchington village in Warwickshire. Guests can enjoy uninterrupted views of the surrounding farmland from all aspects of the property. The village's pond and green are within walking distance, where visitors can find a pub for local beer and good food. The barn sleeps eight guests (maximum six adults) and features four bedrooms, including one en-suite bathroom, two en-suite shower rooms, and one family shower room. A walled, gravelled courtyard with a slate patio and lawned areas offers a relaxing outdoor space for guests to unwind. Families with children are welcome, with a travel cot, high chair, and stairgate available upon request. Parking for up to four vehicles is available, and there is WiFi throughout the property. A minimum three-night stay is required.

Architecturally designed, the fact that it’s rounder than your average house not only makes this place unique, but it offers incredible views from almost anywhere inside the home. You can, of course, also slide open the door that separates the lounge from the outdoor patio and let some of that Derbyshire goodness drift in on the breeze. Forget about time as you amble around, heading to the compact kitchen for a cup of freshly-brewed coffee before sinking into the sofa without a care in the world, the sounds of mother nature a welcome lullaby. 

With board games on offer, you might take to the living room floor for a game or two in front of the crackling fire, but you’ll most likely want to spend most of your time outside. Kids have ample space to run around whilst you supervise from the garden chair with a glass of wine. Barbecue as often as possible or wander the grounds in search of the perfect picnic spot. 

The heated indoor swimming pool is yours for half of the day – make the most of it by playing shoulder wars or marco polo in the clear blue waters. With many walking routes, you’ll be able to see as much of the surroundings as possible, and all at your own pace. Try the Woodside to Chatsworth circular so you can stop off at Chatsworth Stables for a coffee. 

Explore the Peak District, visit the historic Haddon hall, and see the waterfalls – golfing enthusiasts might also want to visit the Bakewell course a short drive away.
