After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. If the weather's playing ball, you can even eat outside, which will give you an opportunity to admire the bucolic scenery.

Sitting deep within the Peak District, you're certainly not short of walking routes in the local area, plus a couple of historic attractions — Magpie Mine is only a ten-minute walk, for instance. And what would a rural getaway be without a charming pub? You'll probably be happy to hear that the closest one is only eight minutes away on foot.

Enjoy a romantic stay at this handsome barn conversion, lying at the end of a track, on a family-run arable farm, surrounded by fields – this is a sublime retreat. Relax with a glass of bubbly in the private hot tub with its idyllic views through the farm to the fields beyond (your lovely hosts provide bathrobes and slippers), then savour a barbecue lunch in the sun. It's also the perfect spot to do a bit of stargazing when the night skies are clear and full of sparkling diamonds. Beautiful bi-fold doors provide plenty of light inside this single-level barn, which was once a grain store. We love the gorgeous stone floor and exposed wooden roof beams framing the high ceiling. A fresh colour scheme of pale cream, yellows and greys complement the rustic yet stylish design. If you can tear yourself away from this love nest, there's plenty to explore. Go for a walk to the historic riverside village of Bidford-on-Avon, sixteen minutes on foot, where you'll find an array of charming pubs, restaurants, shops, and a picturesque church built in 1250. Or visit Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon, around a twenty-five-minute drive, while stunning Warwick Castle is a few minutes more in the car. The magnificent Cotswolds are on your doorstep too – Hidcote Manor Garden, near Chipping Campden, just over a fifteen-minute ride, which has one of Britain's most influential Arts and Crafts gardens.

Say hello to the bantam chickens wandering about, too – they're sure to be firm friends by the end of your stay. We could spend hours here just admiring the precious antiques around the home – including an intricately carved screen brought back by explorer Sir Francis Younghusband after he led the British Army into Tibet. More is more here with curiosities in every corner, but there’s plenty of space to relax too. Unwind in the foliage-filled conservatory, lie on the sofa in the living room where a traditional Persian rug pops against a terracotta floor, or take a walk amidst the daffodils in the garden outside. If you can ever peel yourself away from this magical gem, Newark historic market town – known for its indie shops, antiques and old buildings – is only a fifteen-minute drive from your door. One thing’s for sure, this spot will satisfy the soul.

Dating back to the 19th century, this barn in the White Peak area of the Peak District has ben given a new lease of life in recent years. No longer used for farmyard storage, it's now a country getaway full of luxurious touches.

Though set in a private fourteen-acre estate, this country cottage is within easy distance of local amenities. The historic hamlet of Market Harborough is just a ten-minute drive away, where you'll find a host of independent shops and traditional British eateries. Rectory Cottage

There's something undeniably idyllic about this cottage's location. Sitting alone within acres of Bedfordshire countryside, the River Great Ouse runs alongside the property. You can sit and listen to the peaceful sounds or spot the wildlife that calls the stretch of water home from the outdoor deck, which even has a jetty. If you want to add a touch of decadence, it's also possible to hire a private hot tub and enjoy the scenery surrounded by bubbles.

Heading inside the front door, you'll see that there's a distinctly rustic feel to the interior, particularly the brick flooring and inglenook fireplace holding a log burner. However, you'll also be happy to hear that the home was fully refurbished in 2021, which you can certainly see in the modern blue kitchen and cosy white bedrooms.

When the weather's on your side, there are plenty of walks to embark upon within Turvey Estate and the village itself — along with its pair of pubs, a butchers shop and a park — can be reached in just over a quarter of an hour on foot.

The property is close to Bakewell, famous for its pudding and home to one of the country's oldest markets. Situated within a Peak District estate, this 16th-century hunting tower was built for Bess of Hardwick, the ancestress of the Duke of Devonshire. This four-storey tower isn’t suitable for young children or guests with limited mobility – you’ll need to ascend the steep and winding staircase to reach all areas of this abode. Expect traditional features, with an AGA for cooking family favourites after a day exploring Chatsworth House. You’ll find a health club on the estate too, so speak to your host to arrange a spa session. After a few tennis games on the communal courts, unwind with a glass of red in the cosy sitting room. For local hikes, Curbar Edge and Froggatt Edge are a​​ fifteen-minute drive away.

This charming apartment is tucked away in the heart of the Peak District. It’s the perfect base for a couple looking to spend a few romantic days away in the countryside. Recently restored, you can tell how much love and care has been put into this stunning space that blends beautiful modern comforts with characterful original details to create an unforgettable home. From the underfloor heating to the wood-burning stove, romantic roll-top tub and sweeping views of the Peak District fields and valleys, there’s a storybook warmth and cosiness here that instantly makes you feel welcome. With two outdoor terraces, you can enjoy your breakfast alfresco while the horses roam around you, or fire up the barbecue for a dinner under the stars. Factor in the DVDs, books and board games on hand and there’s plenty to keep you entertained on rainy days – but with so much nature to explore, we recommend grabbing your wellies and venturing out into the great outdoors. Walk around your home to discover the secret walking trails through the woods and ask your host to show you the megalithic Rocking Stone nearby. Visit Robin Hood’s Stride (eleven minutes by car or an hour’s walk), take a dip in the swimming hole at Youlgreave (an eight-minute drive) and spend an afternoon at stately Chatsworth House, fifteen minutes away by car.

Bakewell Bliss

Escape the city in style at this palatial farmhouse, nestled within the Malvern Hills and yet just a ten-minute drive from historic Worcester. 

This 300-year-old abode makes quite the first impression as you roll into its impressive private driveway. And things only get better inside. Spread out over three storeys, with bedrooms generously spaced apart across two floors - there's heaps of space to spill out here. 

Mornings call for freshly brewed coffees on the vast sunny veranda while kids and furry friends run amuck on the lawns - there's an acre of land to explore. Then sit back in the hot tub and soak up the countryside vistas for a while (the sightseeing can wait), as horses and sheep trot on by.

In the evening, come together in the sociable living areas beside wood-burning stoves to break out the board games, while others cook up a feast on the Aga cooker. Or slope away to a cosy nook in the separate sitting room with a good book for some quiet time.

A former sweet shop, this boutique-style home combines original features with contemporary furnishings to create a modern yet warm and inviting space. Stepping inside, you'll find pearly white walls, ceilings and stone floors, while the log burner and wooden beams overhead keep things extra cosy. Explore the rolling green fields of the Peak District National Park right on your doorstep, or enjoy a morning walk through the village, passing cheery pubs, bistros, fish and chip shops and quaint little tea rooms. Stop off for a classic scone with jam and clotted cream or tuck into a full English breakfast close by or visit the award-winning restaurant 'The Merchant's Yard' for a special occasion. In warmer months, make the most of the sunny south-facing courtyard and relax with a bottle of something sparkling after a day spent roaming this beautifully unbridled landscape.

This medieval house is one of the oldest in Stratford-upon-Avon, but the way the host has decorated it marries the new interiors perfectly with the original structure. The slanted walls, wooden panels, and beautiful tiles wouldn’t seem out of place in a Lewis Carroll novel, which for a house with as much history as this, feels pretty apt. It doesn't surprise us that the unique home was chosen as a filming spot for the BBC One show Shakespeare & Hathaway.

We can't decide on a favourite feature – torn between the beam-ceilinged bedrooms, the boutique-style bathrooms, the wall painting from the 1600s, and the location in the very middle of this historic town. The high street, with its Shakespeare museums and old-timely pubs, is just a five-minute walk away. There’s still plenty else for you to discover yourself, as in a house like this there's no shortage of nooks and crannies. 

Flute & Snug

This is a stunning Queen Anne-style property that has been lovingly renovated, dating back to the 1690s. The property boasts plenty of charm and character, with wooden beams and lattice windows, but also features modern amenities. It offers accommodation for up to twelve guests across six en-suite bedrooms, five of which have zip link beds that can be converted to twin beds if desired. The property has two sitting rooms and a snug, as well as eight Smart televisions. Perhaps the most unique feature is the outdoor facilities, including an outdoor dining area with a bespoke resin table seating twelve, hot tub, garden seating area, and tree house observation area. The property is located in Bayton, set in the beautiful Worcestershire countryside near Ludlow and Bewdley. Children of all ages are welcome, and two well-behaved dogs are permitted for a small additional charge. Parking is available for at least four cars.

The Flamingo Lodge

Lovingly renovated and carefully restored, Clare and Paul have turned this barn into a contemporary but warm home. Expect bold florals in the main bedroom, inviting sink-in sofas in the living space and a fully-equipped kitchenette for cooked breakfasts on slow-start mornings.

One side of the barn overlooks rolling hills and patchwork fields, so you can watch the sheep grazing while you relax with a mug of tea on the royal blue loveseat. Then there’s the outside space, which boasts a hot tub for soothing tired muscles after long hikes through the Peaks and a seating area for cream tea in the sunshine.

If country walks are on the agenda, there are a number of public footpaths by your front door and the serene Combs Reservoir is a mere seven-minute walk away. If you’re keen to explore a little further afield, the charming spa town of Buxton is reached in fifteen minutes by car. And when the day draws to a close, sip a gin and tonic in a nearby pub before heading back to your pad to watch a purple dusk fall over the countryside.

Situated on a quiet cul-de-sac just next to Warwick Castle grounds, this cosy home is an excellent place to rest your feet. Warwick town centre is an easy fourteen-minute stroll away, where you'll find historical museums, independent shops, atmospheric pubs and delicious eateries aplenty. As far as locales go, we think it's hard to beat.

When you're not exploring all Warwick has to offer, make yourself right at home. There's a warm, welcoming feel as soon you step through the front door, thanks to stylish decorations and a plush sofa perfect for sprawling. The TV has Netflix if you fancy a movie night, or if you're in the mood to cook, you'll find everything you need in the kitchen to rustle up a delicious meal – best served, of course, at the dining table, with a bottle of wine and the French doors flung open. During the warmer months, the bistro table in the pretty courtyard invites you to wine and dine alfresco – you can even hear the music from the castle's summer concerts floating in the breeze.
